Emerging role of trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) in colorectal cancer
Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology, 2021Among gut microbiota-derived metabolites, trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) is receiving increased attention due to its possible role in the carcinogenesis of colorectal cancer (CRC). In spite of numerous reports implicating TMAO with CRC, there is a lack of empirical mechanistic evidences to concretize the involvement of TMAO in the carcinogenesis of CRC.

Trimethylamine N-Oxide (TMAO) as a Biomarker
2022The interaction between diet, microbiome, and noncommunicable disease onset is gaining growing attention. The trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is a gut microbiota derivative that has been suggested as a potential regulator of human health, especially (but not exclusively) for its association with cardiovascular diseases. It derives from the trimethylamine

Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO): a new attractive target to decrease cardiovascular risk
Postgraduate Medical Journal, 2021AbstractCardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the greatest disease burdens and takes the lives of many each year. There are many risk factors both modifiable and non-modifiable which contribute to the onset and progression of the disease. Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) in recent years has been found to have a correlation with CVD onset.

Trimethylamine N-Oxide (TMAO): a Unique Counteracting Osmolyte?
Paracelsus Proceedings of Experimental Medicine, 2023Cells of many organisms facing osmotic shrinkage or swelling undergo homeostatic volume regulation using osmolytes—inorganic ions (Na+, K+, Cl-) in transient disturbances, but special organic osmolytes in long-term disturbances. Neutral amino acids, methylamines and polyols are key examples.

Complex Formation in Aqueous Trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) Solutions
The Journal of Physical Chemistry B, 2012We study aqueous solutions of the amphiphilic osmolyte trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) using broadband dielectric spectroscopy and femtosecond mid-infrared spectroscopy. Both experiments provide strong evidence for distinctively slower rotation dynamics for water molecules interacting with the hydrophobic part of the TMAO molecules.

Serum Trimethylamine N‐Oxide (TMAO), Diet, and Colorectal Cancer Risk
The FASEB Journal, 2016Objective Choline and carnitine are two compounds that are found in human diets and can be metabolized to trimethylamine (TMA) and, ultimately, to Trimethylamine N‐Oxide (TMAO) by the gut microbiota. There is evidence that individuals with higher serum TMAO concentrations may have subclinical inflammation and ...

The metabolic fate of isotopically labeled trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) in humans
The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, 2017Trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) is associated with chronic disease risk. However, little is known about the metabolic fate of dietary TMAO. This study sought to quantitatively elucidate the metabolic fate of orally consumed TMAO in humans. As part of a crossover feeding study, healthy young men (n=40) consumed 50-mg deuterium-labeled methyl d9-TMAO (d9 ...

Hypertension, 2018
Circulating levels of TMAO are elevated in humans with cardiometabolic diseases. The gut microbiota-initiated TMA/flavin-containing monooxygenase 3 (FMO3)/TMAO pathway has been identified as a potential modulator of host cardiometabolic phenotypes.

Noncovalent Interactions between Trimethylamine N-Oxide (TMAO), Urea, and Water
The Journal of Physical Chemistry B, 2018Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) and urea are two important osmolytes with their main significance to the biophysical field being in how they uniquely interact with proteins. Urea is a strong protein destabilizing agent, whereas TMAO is known to counteract urea's deleterious effects.
