A Single‐Nucleotide Substitution Generates a de Novo Promoter That Activates a Latent Metabolic Bypass in Escherichia coli

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, EarlyView.
A chromosomal mutation allows bypass of deletion of the Escherichia coli fabH gene. The bypass results from creation of a new promoter that drives increased madA transcription, resulting in increased synthesis of acetyl‐acyl carrier protein by decarboxylation of malonyl‐acyl carrier protein.

The Synergy Between a Silver‐Ruthenium Antimicrobial and Aminoglycosides Is Based on Severe Macromolecular Damage

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, EarlyView.
AGXX enhances aminoglycoside activity against multidrug‐resistant pathogens such as uropathogenic Escherichia coli by increasing reactive oxygen species, causing protein aggregation and DNA damage. This effect is reduced by oxygen limitation or antioxidants. Polyphosphate protects cells from oxidative damage.

A Spontaneous Mutation in tfoX Impairs Bioluminescence in Photobacterium kishitanii ANT‐2200

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, EarlyView.
A frameshift mutation in tfoX generates a truncated regulator associated with reduced lux–rib expression and low luminescence. Complementation with wild‐type tfoX restores transcription and light production, supporting a role for TfoX in regulating bioluminescence independently of quorum sensing.

Characterization of Sec14 Domain–Containing Proteins in the Malaria Parasite Plasmodium falciparum

open access: yesMolecular Microbiology, EarlyView.
During asexual blood‐stage development, P. falciparum Sec14 proteins display distinct localizations suggesting specialized roles in lipid exchange. PfSec14‐1 initially localizes to the nucleus before moving to the ER and Golgi alongside PfSec14‐4 during schizogony.

microRNA‐mediated control of cell fate specification and patterning in Marchantia polymorpha

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
The gemma developmental program in Marchantia polymorpha is coordinated by MpMIR166‐mediated repression of MpC3HDZ and auxin homeostasis. Summary MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non‐coding RNA molecules essential for growth and development in eukaryotes. In plants, the master gene DICER‐LIKE 1 (DCL1) catalyzes the biogenesis of miRNAs by processing double‐

tRNA modifications and islet function

Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, 2018
Efficient and accurate protein translation is essential to producing insulin in pancreatic β‐cells. Transfer RNA (tRNA) is known as the key component of the protein translational machinery. Interestingly, tRNA contains a wide variety of chemical modifications, which are posttranscriptionally catalysed by tRNA modifying enzymes.

Cooperativity between different tRNA modifications and their modification pathways

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Gene Regulatory Mechanisms, 2018
Ribonucleotide modifications perform a wide variety of roles in synthesis, turnover and functionality of tRNA molecules. The presence of particular chemical moieties can refine the internal interaction network within a tRNA molecule, influence its thermodynamic stability, contribute novel chemical properties and affect its decoding behavior during mRNA

Patterns of Base Modification in tRNA

Nature New Biology, 1973
WE have previously demonstrated that the N-hydroxy-succinimide ester of phenoxyacetic acid (HSP) reacts with certain species of rat liver tRNA1. The reactive species were identified by an alteration in their elution pattern on benzoylated DEAE-cellulose chromatography.
