Methylating agents as trypanocides
Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, 1990Methylating agents, such as streptozotocin, procarbazine, N-methyl-N-nitrosourea, dimethyl sulfate, 1,2-dimethylhydrazine, and a series of 1,2-bis(sulfonyl)-1-methylhydrazines synthesized in this laboratory, were evaluated and shown to be therapeutically active against murine models of African trypanosomiasis.

Synthesis of sydnonimine derivatives as potential trypanocidal agents
Journal of Heterocyclic Chemistry, 2003AbstractN‐(p‐Nitrophenoxy)carbonyl‐3‐morpholino‐sydnonimine (NCMS) has been prepared from 3‐morpholinosydnonimine hydrochloride. Using the Griess assay and the superoxide‐mediated reduction of ferricytochrome c, the nitric oxide (NO•) and superoxide anion (O2•‐) ‐ releasing properties in phosphate buffer pH 7.4 of this novel peroxynitrite donor was ...

Alkyl-linked bis-THTT derivatives as potent in vitro trypanocidal agents
Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry Letters, 2006The effect of several alkyl-linked bis tetrahydro-(2H)-1,3,5-thiadiazine-2-thione (bis-THTT) on Leishmania donovani, Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense, and Plasmodium falciparum is reported. Most of the compounds exhibited a potent activity against the three parasitic strains but the best in vitro activity profiles were found against T. b.

Synthesis and evaluation of 1,2,2-tris(sulfonyl)hydrazines as antineoplastic and trypanocidal agents
Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, 1990Several 1,2,2-tris(sulfonyl)hydrazines, conceived as prodrugs of 1,2-bis(sulfonyl)hydrazines, were synthesized and evaluated for antineoplastic and trypanocidal activities in mice. 1-Methyl-1,2,2-tris(methylsulfonyl)hydrazine emerged as an extremely efficacious antitrypanosomal agent, whereas 1-(2-chloroethyl)-1,2,2-tris(methylsulfonyl)hydrazine was ...

Photosensitization by the trypanocidal agent crystal violet. Type i versus type II reactions
Chemico-Biological Interactions, 1986The photoreduction of crystal violet to a carbon-centered radical was detected directly by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy under anaerobic conditions. The linewidth (0.9 G) of this radical was less broad than the linewidth (11.0 G) of the free radical obtained in Trypanosoma cruzi incubations.

The available drugs for treating Leishmaniasis and American trypanosomiasis have high toxicity and multiple side effects, among other problems. More effective and less toxic treatments are urgently needed. A series of chalcones that contained a prenyloxy or geranyloxy substituent was synthesized and characterized. Each substituent was attached to the A
