Frog‐biting midges and mosquitoes: Comparative insights from the Oriental and Sino‐Japanese regions
This review synthetizes current knowledge of frog‐biting mosquitoes and midges in the Oriental region and Japan, revealing strong geographic biases in research despite shared amphibian lineages. We highlight key knowledge gaps to guide future studies. Abstract Frog‐biting mosquitoes (Culicidae) and midges (Corethrellidae) are old hematophagous lineages

Heteromeric cis‐prenyltransferases (CPT) are indispensable for dolichol synthesis and protein N‐glycosylation in most eukaryotes. The catalytic subunits are strongly conserved throughout evolution, in contrast to the evolutionarily variable accessory subunits. The POC1 protein from Paramecium tetraurelia is the smallest identified CPT‐accessory subunit

Protein import into mitochondria relies on TIM complexes and the membrane potential. Trypanosoma brucei has a unique TIM complex, and the role of one subunit, TbTim20, has remained unclear. Here, we show that TbTim20 is essential in cells lacking mitochondrial DNA. The importance of TbTim20 increases as the membrane potential decreases.
