Development of bioluminescent reporter Trypanosoma cruzi and bioassay for compound screening

open access: yesFrontiers in Chemical Biology
Trypanosoma cruzi is the etiologic agent of Chagas’ disease, a debilitating and mortal zoonotic illness that threatens the lives of several millions of people in the American continent. The acute phase is underdiagnosed and there is no curative treatment

Structure, Properties, and Function of Glycosomes in Trypanosoma cruzi

open access: yesFrontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology, 2020
Glycosomes are peroxisome-related organelles that have been identified in kinetoplastids and diplonemids. The hallmark of glycosomes is their harboring of the majority of the glycolytic enzymes.

Nitroheterocyclic drug resistance mechanisms in Trypanosoma brucei [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to identify the mechanisms of resistance to nifurtimox and fexinidazole in African trypanosomes. METHODS: Bloodstream-form Trypanosoma brucei were selected for resistance to nifurtimox and fexinidazole by ...

The Spliced Leader RNA Silencing (SLS) Pathway in Trypanosoma brucei Is Induced by Perturbations of Endoplasmic Reticulum, Golgi Complex, or Mitochondrial Protein Factors: Functional Analysis of SLS-Inducing Kinase PK3

open access: yesmBio, 2021
In the parasite Trypanosoma brucei, the causative agent of human African sleeping sickness, all mRNAs are trans-spliced to generate a common 5′ exon derived from the spliced leader (SL) RNA.

t-loops at trypanosome telomeres [PDF]

open access: yesThe EMBO Journal, 2001
Mammalian telomeres form large duplex loops (t-loops) that may sequester chromosome ends by invasion of the 3′ TTAGGG overhang into the duplex TTAGGG repeat array. Here we document t-loops in Trypanosoma brucei, a kinetoplastid protozoan with abundant telomeres due to the presence of many minichromosomes.

Metatranscriptomic analyses of honey bee colonies

open access: yesFrontiers in Genetics, 2015
Honey bees face numerous biotic threats from viruses to bacteria, fungi, protists, and mites. Here we describe a thorough analysis of microbes harbored by worker honey bees collected from field colonies in geographically distinct regions of Turkey ...

Through the dark continent: African trypanosome development in the tsetse fly [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
African trypanosomes are unicellular flagellated parasites causing trypanosomiases in Africa, a group of severe diseases also known as sleeping sickness in human and nagana in cattle.

Trypanosome Glycosylphosphatidylinositol Biosynthesis [PDF]

open access: yesThe Korean Journal of Parasitology, 2009
Trypanosoma brucei, a protozoan parasite, causes sleeping sickness in humans and Nagana disease in domestic animals in central Africa. The trypanosome surface is extensively covered by glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored proteins known as variant surface glycoproteins and procyclins.
