Inflammatory cytokines mediate the induction of and awakening from metastatic dormancy
Summary: Metastases arise from disseminated cancer cells (DCCs) that detach from the primary tumor and seed distant organs. There, quiescent DCCs can survive for an extended time, a state referred to as metastatic dormancy.

This work presents ARC‐3D, a soft 3D model that recreates how brain support cells, called astrocytes, react to oxidative stress. The system visualizes rapid calcium changes and inflammatory signals, and shows how the drug KDS12025 can protect cells from damage. ARC‐3D offers a simple, reliable way to study early drivers of brain inflammation.

A Biomimetic Buffering Hydrogel Scaffold for Long‐Term Culture of Patient‐Derived Tumor Organoids
A biomimetic fibrous buffering hydrogel controls the local acidification at the tumoroid/hydrogel interface at the physiologically relevant level over 21‐day culture. The buffering effect promotes cancer cell proliferation in the tumoroids and supports the structural integrity and mechanical properties of the hydrogel scaffold over long‐term tumoroid ...

This review explores how alternative invertebrate and small‐vertebrate models advance the evaluation of nanomaterials across medicine and environmental science. By bridging cellular and organismal levels, these models enable integrated assessment of toxicity, biodistribution, and therapeutic performance.

Autophagy-induced tumor dormancy in ovarian cancer [PDF]
Autophagy--a process of "self-eating" that involves enzymatic digestion and recycling of cellular constituents in response to stress--contributes to both cancer cell death and survival. In this issue of the JCI, Lu et al. report that controlled induction of tumor suppressor gene aplasia Ras homolog member I (ARHI) results in autophagic cell death of ...
