Rapid Remodeling of the Human Gut Microbiome in Response to Short‐Term Animal Product Restriction and Associations with Host Molecular Phenotypes

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A real‐world model of structured animal product restriction practiced for religious reasons reveals the dynamic adaptability of the human gut microbiome to dietary change and uncovers reductions in diversity and rare taxa loss. Integrated microbiome, metabolomic, and proteomic analyses uncover coordinated taxonomic and molecular shifts and identify ...

Hmga2 is dispensable for pancreatic cancer development, metastasis, and therapy resistance. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Expression of the chromatin-associated protein HMGA2 correlates with progression, metastasis and therapy resistance in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Hmga2 has also been identified as a marker of a transient subpopulation of PDAC cells that has

Inhibition of Calcium‐Dependent Lipid Droplets Relocation of ACSL4‐PKCβ‐ALOX15 Complex Alleviates Ferroptosis and Acute Pancreatitis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study identifies L‐type calcium channel blockers as novel ferroptosis inhibitors. It reveals that PKCβ, activated in calcium dependent manner, phosphorylates and activates ACSL4 and ALOX15, relocating them to lipid droplets to promote lethal lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis.

Guidelines for writing definitions in ontologies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Ontologies are being used increasingly to promote the reusability of scientific information by allowing heterogeneous data to be integrated under a common, normalized representation. Definitions play a central role in the use of ontologies both by humans

Placental-mediated increased cytokine response to lipopolysaccharides: a potential mechanism for enhanced inflammation susceptibility of the preterm fetus. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
BackgroundCerebral palsy is a nonprogressive motor impairment syndrome that has no effective cure. The etiology of most cases of cerebral palsy remains unknown; however, recent epidemiologic data have demonstrated an association between fetal neurologic ...

Activated Platelet–Released Heat Shock Protein 90α Triggers Autophagy‐Dependent Neutrophil Extracellular Trap Formation and Amplifies Sepsis

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
HSP90α is significantly upregulated in platelets from sepsis patients, with its origin from megakaryocyte‐derived trafficking. Furthermore, activated platelets secrete HSP90α into the extracellular space in both free and exosome‐associated forms. Finally, extracellular HSP90α directly engages TLR4 on neutrophils to induce autophagy, leading to NET ...

Spontaneous tumor lysis syndrome in colon cancer: a case report and literature review

open access: yesClinical Case Reports, 2017
Key Clinical Message Although tumor lysis syndrome is well described, it is rarely seen or suspected in solid malignancies. Early recognition of this entity is paramount in reducing morbidity and mortality.

Connexin43 Deficiency Leads to Ventricular Arrhythmias by Reprogramming Proline Metabolism

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The study demonstrated that connexin43 (Cx43) knockout caused arrhythmic phenotype and decreased proline content in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, Cx43 interacts with the amino acid transporter SNAT2 (sodium‐dependent neutral amino acid transporter), and its deficiency disrupts proline transport and metabolism.

Calcium Channel Blockers Inhibit Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Neoplasms Progression via Cav1.2‐Epigenetic Circuit

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Our study reveals a novel mechanism of a positive regulatory circuit between Cav1.2 and H3K27ac for pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (pNENs) progression. Cav1.2 is identified as a crucial target for promoting disease progression and correlates with malignant behaviors, which are remarkably inhibited by the administration of calcium channel blockers (

Caspase‐3/GSDME‐Mediated Trophoblast Pyroptosis and Reciprocal Macrophage Polarization Contribute to Inflammation in Early‐Onset Preeclampsia

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In trophoblast cells, T/S (TNFα + SM164) activated caspase‐3, which cleaved GSDME to switch apoptosis to pyroptosis, causing cell swelling, membrane rupture, and release of LDH, HMGB1, IL‐1β and IL‐18. These cytokines induced pro‐inflammatory macrophage polarization, which in turn reinforced pyroptotic signaling in trophoblasts, amplifying systemic ...
