Originally known for their roles in a myriad of bacterial processes, the two-component signaling systems are now found far beyond the bacterial domain. Papon and Stock highlight the many interesting features of these widespread signaling systems.

Crystallization in Two-Component Coulomb Systems [PDF]
The analysis of Coulomb crystallization is extended from one-component to two-component plasmas. Critical parameters for the existence of Coulomb crystals are derived for both classical and quantum crystals. In the latter case, a critical mass ratio of the two charged components is found which is of the order of 80.

A small protein that mediates the activation of a two‐component system by another two‐component system [PDF]
The PmrA-PmrB two-component system of Salmonella enterica controls resistance to the peptide antibiotic polymyxin B and to several antimicrobial proteins from human neutrophils. Transcription of PmrA-activated genes is induced by high iron, but can also be promoted by growth in low magnesium in a process that requires another two-component system, PhoP-

On component interactions in two-stage recommender systems
Thanks to their scalability, two-stage recommenders are used by many of today's largest online platforms, including YouTube, LinkedIn, and Pinterest. These systems produce recommendations in two steps: (i) multiple nominators, tuned for low prediction latency, preselect a small subset of candidates from the whole item pool; (ii) a slower but more ...

Helicobacter pylori colonizes the human gastric mucosa and causes various gastroduodenal diseases, including peptic ulceration and gastric cancer. Colonization requires the actions of two-component systems (TCSs) to sense and respond to changes in the ...

Periodic Inspection Optimization for a Two-Component System with Dependent Failures [PDF]
In this research, a novel model is presented to optimize the periodic inspection for a complicated two-component system with dependent failures. In this model, the failures of the first and the second component are soft and hard, respectively.

Two-Component Systems in Francisella Species [PDF]
Bacteria alter gene expression in response to changes in their environment through various mechanisms that include signal transduction systems. These signal transduction systems use membrane histidine kinase with sensing domains to mediate phosphotransfer to DNA-binding proteins that alter the level of gene expression.

Ferric and ferrous iron is an essential transition metal for growth of many bacterial species including mycobacteria. The genomic region msmeg_0234 to msmeg_0252 from Mycobacterium smegmatis is putatively involved in iron/heme metabolism.
