Ecology of Abandonment: Meadow Field Layer Vegetation After a Century of Overgrowth
A century of unmanaged succession in a Swedish wooded meadow at Vessers Udde. Approximately 70% of vascular plant species were lost as light‐demanding meadow specialists disappeared and shade‐tolerant spring geophytes came to dominate the forest understorey. Loss rates were much higher than colonisation rates documented across four resurveys.

Effect of fertilization on growth of lingonberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea L.)
Today, most of the global berry crop of Vaccinium vitis-idaea L. is obtained from wild berries. In recent years, however, their cultivation has become slightly more widespread, especially as demand has increased. As the commercial production of lingonberries is a completely new fruit-growing sector in Latvia, research on mineral nutrition, development ...

Fertile Soils Increase Susceptibility of Pinus sylvestris to Cronartium pini
ABSTRACT Cronartium pini, Scots pine blister rust, is a rust fungus that has caused severe damage in both old and young Scots pine (P. sylvestris) forest stands in northern Fennoscandia. To understand the many drivers of these outbreaks we examined putative factors and their explanatory power of C.

Reindeer grazing has contrasting effect on species traits in Vaccinium vitis-idaea L. and Bistorta vivipara (L.) Gray [PDF]
That reindeer grazing can have large effects on plant communities is well known, but how reindeer grazing affects plant traits and plant carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) allocation has not been studied to the same extent.

Biochar application on top of the soil can be successful in already established and naturally regenerated boreal forest stands. Biochar tends to increase diameter and basal area growth. Increasing biochar dose enhanced growth response. Biochar induced growth response diminished 5 years after application.

Polyphenol stabilization and integration enable active food packaging with antioxidant, antimicrobial, freshness indicating, and controlled‐release functions under real storage conditions. ABSTRACT Polyphenols are increasingly explored as functional components in active and intelligent food preservation systems because of their antioxidant ...

Features of grass and subshrub reproduction in forest phytocoenoses
The north-east region of Ukraine stands out from the other regions including the Carpathians for high forest cover. Grass and subshrub layer significantly affects the formation of tree layer (the early stages of forest demutation).
