Vagus Nerve Visualization Using Fused Images of 3D-CT Angiography and MRI as Preoperative Evaluation for Vagus Nerve Stimulation

open access: yesBrain Sciences, 2023
Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is an effective surgical option for intractable epilepsy. Although the surgical procedure is not so complicated, vagus nerve detection is sometimes difficult due to its anatomical variations, which may lead to surgical ...

Autonomic regulation therapy to enhance myocardial function in heart failure patients: the ANTHEM-HFpEF study. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
BackgroundApproximately half of the patients presenting with new-onset heart failure (HF) have HF with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction (HFpEF) and HF with mid-range left ventricular ejection fraction (HFmrEF).

Mortality and suicide risk in treatment-resistant depression: an observational study of the long-term impact of intervention.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
Major depressive disorder is a common global disease that causes a significant societal burden. Most interventional studies of depression provide a limited assessment of the interventions on mortality and suicide risks.

Vagus Nerve Stimulation in Refractory Epilepsy: Effects on Pro- and Anti-Inflammatory Cytokines in Peripheral Blood [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Objective: The vagus nerve has important immunological functions that may be relevant for its anticonvulsive action. We postulate that this anticonvulsive action is activated by a shift in the immune system resulting in a reduction of neurotoxic and an ...

Conduction of activity between muscles in the terminal region of the common bile duct and in the neighboring duodenum [PDF]

open access: yes, 1976
The relationship between muscle activity at the terminal region of the common bile duct and the duodenal muscle was examined in rabbits. The rhythmic muscle activity in the terminal region was synchronous with duodenal muscle activity.

The homuncular jigsaw: investigations of phantom limb and body awareness following brachial plexus block or avulsion [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Many neuropsychological theories agree that the brain maintains a relatively persistent representation of one's own body, as indicated by vivid "phantom" experiences.

Electrical stimulation of the vagus nerve protects against cerebral ischemic injury through an anti-infammatory mechanism

open access: yesNeural Regeneration Research, 2015
Vagus nerve stimulation exerts protective effects against ischemic brain injury; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, a rat model of focal cerebral ischemia was established using the occlusion method, and the right vagus ...

Non-invasive Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation as a Potential Treatment for Covid19-Originated Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome

open access: yesFrontiers in Physiology, 2020
Background: Covid-19 is an infectious disease caused by an invasion of the alveolar epithelial cells by coronavirus 19. The most severe outcome of the disease is the Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) combined with hypoxemia and cardiovascular ...

The Case of a 28‐Year‐Old Woman With Medically Refractory Focal Epilepsy

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We present the case of a 28‐year‐old right‐handed woman with medically refractory focal epilepsy. Her seizure semiology and electroencephalography (EEG) indicated a seizure onset zone in the right central‐parietal area. However, both MRI and PET scans were unremarkable, showing no focal lesions or areas of altered metabolism.

Methods, systems, and devices for pairing vagus nerve stimulation with motor therapy in stroke patients [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
A method of treating motor deficits in a stroke patient, comprising assessing a patient's motor deficits, determining therapeutic goals for the patient, based on the patient's motor deficits, selecting therapeutic tasks based on the therapeutic goals ...
