Very Long‐Chain Fatty Acids in Erythrocyte Membrane Phospholipids in Adrenoleukodystrophy

Pediatrics International, 1989
Mass fragmentography was used to analyze the very longchain fatty acid (VLCFA) composition of erythrocyte membrane phospholipids. The VLCFA content decreased in the order sphingomyelin (SM), phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE). The tetracosanoic acid (C24:0) and hexacosanoic acid (C26:0) content of both SM and PC in patients with

A synthesis of unsaturated very long chain fatty acids

Chemistry and Physics of Lipids, 1990
Abstract A general scheme for the preparation of unsaturated very long chain fatty acid methyl esters with between one and four (non-conjugated) double bonds, using the conjunctive reagent tosylmethylisocyanide, is outline. Specific details of the syntheses of 27:1, n-9; 28:1, n-7; 32:4, n-6 and 34:1, n-9 fatty acid methyl esters are provided.

An improved method for quantification of very long chain fatty acids in plasma

Clinical Biochemistry, 1994
Most peroxisomal disorders can be detected via analysis of very long chain fatty acids (VLCFA) and phytanic acid in plasma or serum. Previous methods utilizing gas-liquid chromatography (GLC) alone are time consuming and are hampered by interference from cholesterol derivatives.

Resistance to herbicides inhibiting the biosynthesis of very‐long‐chain fatty acids

Pest Management Science, 2014
AbstractHerbicides that act by inhibiting the biosynthesis of very‐long‐chain fatty acids (VLCFAs) have been used to control grass weeds in major crops throughout the world for the past 60 years. VLCFA‐inhibiting herbicides are generally highly selective in crops, induce similar symptoms in susceptible grasses and can be found within the herbicide ...

The function of very long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids in the pineal gland

Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Molecular and Cell Biology of Lipids, 2010
The mammalian pineal gland is a prominent secretory organ with a high metabolic activity. Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine), the main secretory product of the pineal gland, efficiently scavenges both the hydroxyl and peroxyl radicals counteracting lipid peroxidation in biological membranes.
