Viability is in the Eye of the Beholder…

open access: yesJACC: Cardiovascular Imaging, 2012
The term myocardial “viability” in chronic left ventricular (LV) dysfunction due to coronary artery disease has been interpreted in multiple ways by clinicians and imagers alike. The classic definition assesses whether or not the myocardial tissue under consideration is alive or dead. However,

The impact of cadmium exposure on cell parameters, expression of specific genes and mineralization in cultivated human osteoblasts

open access: yesJournal of Biological Research - Thessaloniki, 2022
Cadmium (Cd) is a widespread environmental pollutant which negatively affects bone health. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of Cd exposure on cell parameters, expression of specific genes and mineralization in cultivated human ...

DeepTransition: Viability Leads to the Emergence of Gait Transitions in Learning Anticipatory Quadrupedal Locomotion Skills [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Quadruped animals seamlessly transition between gaits as they change locomotion speeds. While the most widely accepted explanation for gait transitions is energy efficiency, there is no clear consensus on the determining factor, nor on the potential effects from terrain properties. In this article, we propose that viability, i.e. the avoidance of falls,

Human colon organoid differentiation from induced pluripotent stem cells using an improved method

open access: yesFEBS Letters, Volume 599, Issue 6, Page 912-924, March 2025.
We compared established protocols to differentiate induced pluripotent stem cells into colon organoids and found that activation of bone morphogenetic protein 2 signaling induced gene expression of colon‐specific markers. Adenovirus‐mediated transduction of the transcription factors HOXD13 or SATB2 further enhanced colonic gene expression, suggesting ...

On the viability of the No Alternatives Argument [PDF]

open access: yesStudies in History and Philosophy of Science Part A, 2019
If we cannot directly empirically test the claims of a particular scientific theory directly, then it would be nice to have some other criteria with which to assess its viability. In his 2013 book, String Theory and the Scientific Method, Richard Dawid aims to develop such criteria, with an eye to vindicating research programmess in disciplines where ...

Use of phosphorus- and potassium-solubilizing multifunctional microbes to support maize growth and yield

open access: yesSains Tanah: Journal of Soil Science and Agroclimatology, 2022
Intensive chemical fertilizer use has led to environmental problems, ecological impacts, and dependence on chemical fertilizers. Microbial inoculants (biofertilizers) combined with mineral fertilizers can be used to establish an environmentally friendly ...

Diphthamide synthesis is linked to the eEF2‐client chaperone machinery

open access: yesFEBS Letters, Volume 599, Issue 9, Page 1260-1268, May 2025.
The diphthamide modification of eukaryotic translation elongation factor 2 (eEF2) is important for accurate protein synthesis. We addressed the potential coordination of de novo eEF2 synthesis with simultaneous or subsequent diphthamide modification. Our work reveals that the co‐chaperones Hgh1 and Cpr7, which are known to support folding of nascent ...

Ablation of LRP6 in alpha‐smooth muscle actin‐expressing cells abrogates lung inflammation and fibrosis upon bleomycin‐induced lung injury

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Low‐density lipoprotein receptor‐related protein 6 (LRP6) is a key receptor for the Wnt antagonist Dickkopf1 (DKK1). DKK1 protein expression is induced in a bleomycin (BLM)‐induced lung injury model. We show that DKK1 induces proinflammatory and profibrotic genes in lung fibroblasts.

Effects of Biotin and Folic Acid on Motility, Viability, Morphology, Chromatin Density and Integrity of Cryopreserved and Thawed Sperm in Normozoospermic Men

open access: yesمجله علمی دانشگاه علوم پزشکی کردستان, 2021
Background and aim: Cryopreservation is one of the common techniques in the management of infertility, which can damage the sperm cell and its function by producing reactive oxygen species.

On the viability of regular black holes [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of High Energy Physics, 2018
The evaporation of black holes raises a number of conceptual issues, most of them related to the final stages of evaporation, where the interplay between the central singularity and Hawking radiation cannot be ignored.
