Viability is in the Eye of the Beholder…
The term myocardial “viability” in chronic left ventricular (LV) dysfunction due to coronary artery disease has been interpreted in multiple ways by clinicians and imagers alike. The classic definition assesses whether or not the myocardial tissue under consideration is alive or dead. However,

DeepTransition: Viability Leads to the Emergence of Gait Transitions in Learning Anticipatory Quadrupedal Locomotion Skills [PDF]
Quadruped animals seamlessly transition between gaits as they change locomotion speeds. While the most widely accepted explanation for gait transitions is energy efficiency, there is no clear consensus on the determining factor, nor on the potential effects from terrain properties. In this article, we propose that viability, i.e. the avoidance of falls,

Human colon organoid differentiation from induced pluripotent stem cells using an improved method
We compared established protocols to differentiate induced pluripotent stem cells into colon organoids and found that activation of bone morphogenetic protein 2 signaling induced gene expression of colon‐specific markers. Adenovirus‐mediated transduction of the transcription factors HOXD13 or SATB2 further enhanced colonic gene expression, suggesting ...

On the viability of the No Alternatives Argument [PDF]
If we cannot directly empirically test the claims of a particular scientific theory directly, then it would be nice to have some other criteria with which to assess its viability. In his 2013 book, String Theory and the Scientific Method, Richard Dawid aims to develop such criteria, with an eye to vindicating research programmess in disciplines where ...

Diphthamide synthesis is linked to the eEF2‐client chaperone machinery
The diphthamide modification of eukaryotic translation elongation factor 2 (eEF2) is important for accurate protein synthesis. We addressed the potential coordination of de novo eEF2 synthesis with simultaneous or subsequent diphthamide modification. Our work reveals that the co‐chaperones Hgh1 and Cpr7, which are known to support folding of nascent ...

Low‐density lipoprotein receptor‐related protein 6 (LRP6) is a key receptor for the Wnt antagonist Dickkopf1 (DKK1). DKK1 protein expression is induced in a bleomycin (BLM)‐induced lung injury model. We show that DKK1 induces proinflammatory and profibrotic genes in lung fibroblasts.

On the viability of regular black holes [PDF]
The evaporation of black holes raises a number of conceptual issues, most of them related to the final stages of evaporation, where the interplay between the central singularity and Hawking radiation cannot be ignored.
