Human Pegivirus Type 1: A Common Human Virus That Is Beneficial in Immune-Mediated Disease?
Two groups identified a novel human flavivirus in the mid-1990s. One group named the virus hepatitis G virus (HGV) and the other named it GB Virus type C (GBV-C).

Phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinase as a target of pathogens—friend or foe?
This graphical summary illustrates the roles of phosphatidylinositol 4‐kinases (PI4Ks). PI4Ks regulate key cellular processes and can be hijacked by pathogens, such as viruses, bacteria and parasites, to support their intracellular replication. Their dual role as essential host enzymes and pathogen cofactors makes them promising drug targets.

Amino acid substitutions at the HIV-1 transframe region significantly impair virus infectivity.
A transframe region within HIV-1 Gag-Pol (referred to as p6* or p6pol), directly linked to the protease (PR) N-terminus, plays a pivotal role in modulating PR activation. To identify specific p6* residues involved in PR activation, we created a series of

Specificity of a Neuraminidase Activity of Sendai Virus
SummaryThe pH optima for the neuraminidase activity of several myxoviruses were determined. The same pH optimum was found for Sendai virus grown in either egg or L cell and for NDV which is closely related to the former virus. However, the antibody prepared against the neuraminidase fraction of egg-grown Sendai virus showed an inhibitory effect only on

Tracking Virus-Specific CD4+ T Cells during and after Acute Hepatitis C Virus Infection [PDF]
Background. CD4+ T cell help is critical in maintaining antiviral immune responses and such help has been shown to be sustained in acute resolving hepatitis C.

Protein pyrophosphorylation by inositol pyrophosphates — detection, function, and regulation
Protein pyrophosphorylation is an unusual signaling mechanism that was discovered two decades ago. It can be driven by inositol pyrophosphate messengers and influences various cellular processes. Herein, we summarize the research progress and challenges of this field, covering pathways found to be regulated by this posttranslational modification as ...

The Chikungunya Virus nsP3 Macro Domain Inhibits Activation of the NF-κB Pathway
The role of the chikungunya virus (CHIKV) non-structural protein 3 (nsP3) in the virus lifecycle is poorly understood. The protein comprises three domains.

Anti-RNA virus activity of polyoxometalates
The anti-RNA virus activity of polyoxometalates (POM) is reviewed, with a special emphasis on the anti-respiratory virus activities. There are many causative agents of acute viral respiratory infections; and it is rather difficult to identify the relevant agent in a given case by rapid clinical means.

The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...
