2003We introduce the notion of innovations for Viterbidecoding of convolutional codes. First we define a kind of innovationcorresponding to the received data, i.e., the input to a Viterbidecoder. Then the structure of a Scarce-State-Transition (SST)Viterbi decoder is derived in a natural manner.

In a naive implementation, every bit in the memory must be changed (read, modified, and rewritten) for each message bit decoded, and, in addition, some double buffering is required.
