The LDL receptor was discovered by Goldstein and Brown in 1974. This discovery has led to dramatic progress toward understanding the mechanisms of cholesterol homeostasis. Recently we have found a second lipoprotein receptor that specifically binds apoE-containing lipoproteins.

Kinetic analysis of plasma VLDL‐TG and VLDL‐remnant‐TG turnover in anesthetized rats
Lipids, 1983AbstractWe have estimated the turnover and relative pool sizes of nascent‐VLDL‐TG and VLDL‐remnants‐TG in anesthetized rats. [1‐14C]Palmitoyl‐ and [2‐3H]glyceryl‐labeled “VLDL”‐TG (including nascent VLDL‐TG and VLDL‐remnants‐TG) were prepared by injecting labeled palmitate and glycerol into donor rats.

The Origin and Fate of Chylomicrons and VLDL
1977The intracellular processes of the formation of chylomicrons and VLDL are probably quite similar (1). Electron microscopy has provided evidence that precursor-particles are present within the profiles of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus of intestinal mucosal and hepatic parenchymal cells.

Of the methods to measure VLDL triglyceride (TG) turnover in humans, the simplest is that utilizing 3H-glycerol. We showed that when simultaneous measurements were made with the radioglycerol method and the lipolytic rate method, a method which depends on different assumptions, similar turnover rates were obtained (Steiner and Murase, 1975).
