Editorial : clinical cancer research in vulnerable populations

open access: yes, 2023
Vulnerable populations in cancer care include a wide array of possible conditions (see Table 1). Their vulnerabilities, whether medical, sociocultural, age- or socioeconomic-related, cause these cancer populations to be excluded from clinical trials ...

Developmental programmes drive cellular plasticity, disease progression and therapy resistance in lung adenocarcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study shows that lung adenocarcinomas exploit developmental branching morphogenesis to acquire a therapy resistant basal‐like tumour cell state. This process was found to be regulated by combined TP53 loss‐of‐function and type‐I interferon signalling, identifying a novel axis for biomarker and therapeutic target discovery.

Rapid assessment of drug use and sexual HIV risk patterns among vulnerable drugusing populations in Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria, South Africa

open access: yesSAHARA-J, 2008
This exploratory study examines the links between drug use and high-risk sexual practices and HIV in vulnerable drug-using populations in South Africa, including commercial sex workers (CSWs), men who have sex with men (MSM), injecting drug users (IDUs ...

Development of a Frailty Framework Among Vulnerable Populations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Frailty is a public health issue that is experienced by homeless and other vulnerable populations; to date, a frailty framework has not been proposed to guide researchers who study hard-to-reach populations.

Finding novel vulnerabilities of hypomorphic BRCA1 alleles

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Synthetic lethality screens performed to identify novel vulnerabilities often model complete gene loss, thereby overlooking patient‐derived hypomorphic mutations. In this study, we have performed genome‐wide CRISPR screens on BRCA1 hypomorphic mutations, showing BRCA1I26A behaves like wild‐type, while BRCA1R1699Q mimics deficiency. Furthermore, we have

Complementary medicine among individuals experiencing homelessness in Switzerland: a quantitative and qualitative descriptive study

open access: yesBMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies
Background People experiencing homelessness (PEH) are disproportionately affected by health issues yet remain underserved by the health care system. Emerging findings suggest that complementary medicine (CM) approaches might help address the low access ...

Epigenetic heterogeneity and plasticity in therapy‐induced tumor states through single‐cell multi‐omics

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Single‐cell multi‐omics reveals epigenetic heterogeneity across therapy‐adaptive tumor states, including quiescent/dormant, drug‐tolerant persister, and EMT‐like phenotypes. By linking regulatory features with state‐associated biomarkers, these approaches inform biomarker‐guided therapeutic strategies for evolving tumors.

Clinical Effectiveness of Traditional Polyherbal Formulations for Wound Healing: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

open access: yesThe Scientific World Journal
Chronic wounds, especially in diabetic patients, are difficult to manage because of delayed healing and high infection risk. Traditional polyherbal formulations, which are composed of multiple medicinal plants with synergistic effects, are widely used in

An Efficient Gatekeeper Algorithm for Detecting GxE

open access: yesCancer Informatics, 2010
The risk for many complex diseases is believed to be a result of the interactive effects of genetic and environmental factors. Developing efficient techniques to identify gene-environment interactions (GxE) is important for unraveling the etiologic basis

Effects of introduced trout predation on non-diadromous galaxiid fish populations across invaded riverscapes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We assessed the landscape-scale effect of predation pressure from trout on the population integrity and distributions of non-diadromous galaxiids in high-country streams of the South Island, New Zealand.
