Molecular detection and characterization of foodborne bacteria: Recent progresses and remaining challenges

open access: yesComprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety, Volume 22, Issue 3, Page 2433-2464, May 2023., 2023
Abstract The global food demand is expected to increase in the coming years, along with challenges around climate change and food security. Concomitantly, food safety risks, particularly those related to bacterial pathogens, may also increase. Thus, the food sector needs to innovate to rise to this challenge.

Genomic diversity, virulence and source of Campylobacter jejuni contamination in Irish poultry slaughterhouses by whole genome sequencing

open access: yesJournal of Applied Microbiology, Volume 133, Issue 5, Page 3150-3160, November 2022., 2022
Abstract Aims The aim was to exploit whole genome sequencing (WGS) to assess genomic diversity, identify virulence genes and deduce the proportion of Campylobacter colonized broilers that directly contaminate their carcasses. Methods and Results Campylobacter jejuni isolates (107) from caeca and carcass neck skin samples (50 pairs from the same batch ...

Genomic Analysis Reveals That Isolation Temperature on Selective Media Introduces Genetic Variation in Campylobacter jejuni from Bovine Feces

open access: yesPathogens, 2022
Campylobacter jejuni is commonly isolated on selective media following incubation at 37 °C or 42 °C, but the impact of these temperatures on genome variation remains unclear. Previously, Campylobacter selective enrichments from the feces of steers before

Advantages and disadvantages of non‐starter lactic acid bacteria from traditional fermented foods: Potential use as starters or probiotics

open access: yesComprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety, Volume 21, Issue 2, Page 1537-1567, March 2022., 2022
Abstract Traditional fermented foods are a significant source of starter and/or non‐starter lactic acid bacteria (nsLAB). Moreover, these microorganisms are also known for their role as probiotics. The potential of nsLAB is huge; however, there are still challenges to be overcome with respect to characterization and application.

Agricultural fertilization with poultry manure results in persistent environmental contamination with the pathogen Clostridioides difficile

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 23, Issue 12, Page 7591-7602, December 2021., 2021
Summary During a field experiment applying broiler manure for fertilization of agricultural land, we detected viable Clostridioides (also known as Clostridium) difficile in broiler faeces, manure, dust and fertilized soil. A large diversity of toxigenic C. difficile isolates was recovered, including PCR ribotypes common from human disease.

Development and evaluation of a core genome multilocus sequence typing scheme for Paenibacillus larvae, the deadly American foulbrood pathogen of honeybees

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 23, Issue 9, Page 5042-5051, September 2021., 2021
Summary Paenibacillus larvae is the causative agent of the fatal American foulbrood disease in honeybees (Apis mellifera). Strain identification is vital for preventing the spread of the disease. To date, the most accessible and robust scheme to identify strains is the multilocus sequence typing (MLST) method.

Genomic characterization of multidrug‐resistant ESBL‐producing Escherichia coli ST58 causing fatal colibacillosis in critically endangered Brazilian merganser (Mergus octosetaceus)

open access: yesTransboundary and Emerging Diseases, Volume 68, Issue 2, Page 258-266, March 2021., 2021
Abstract Even though antimicrobial‐resistant bacteria have begun to be detected in wildlife, raising important issues related to their transmission and persistence of clinically important pathogens in the environment, little is known about the role of these bacteria on wildlife health, especially on endangered species.

Retrospective Use of Whole‐Genome Sequencing Expands the Multicountry Outbreak Cluster of Listeria monocytogenes ST1247

open access: yesInternational Journal of Genomics, Volume 2021, Issue 1, 2021., 2021
Listeria monocytogenes sequence type 1247 clonal complex 8 caused a prolonged multicountry outbreak in five EU countries: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, and Sweden. A total of 22 disease cases were identified with onset of symptoms between July 2014 and February 2019. Five patients died due to, or with, the disease. The retrospective analysis of L.
