Evaluating the effect of γ‐oryzanol on MASLD pathology using a medaka fish model

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study explores a liver disease called MASLD, which is increasing worldwide and can lead to serious damage. Researchers used medaka fish instead of rodents to test a food compound, γ‐oryzanol. Fish fed this compound had less liver fat and healthier gut bacteria.

Diffusion tensor imaging detects age-dependent white matter changes in a transgenic mouse model with amyloid deposition

open access: yesNeurobiology of Disease, 2004
Increasing evidence demonstrates that there is marked damage and dysfunction not only in the gray matter but also in the white matter in Alzheimer's disease (AD).

The strength and timing of the mitochondrial bottleneck in salmon suggests a conserved mechanism in vertebrates

open access: yes, 2011
In most species mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is inherited maternally in an apparently clonal fashion, although how this is achieved remains uncertain.

Avidin is evolutionarily conserved in fish but dispensable for development and resistance against Streptococcus agalactiae in zebrafish

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The presence of biotin‐binding avidin proteins in fish and their biological significance are poorly characterized. We cataloged fish avidins and demonstrate that they are widely present and evolutionarily conserved. We created avd knockout zebrafish and show that zebavidin is dispensable for development and that resistance of avd knockout embryos in ...

The C‐terminal truncated splicing variant of NK1R negatively modulates substance P‐stimulated NK1R signaling

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
The neurokinin 1 receptor exists as full‐length (NK1L) and C‐terminally truncated (NK1S) splice variants. We show that NK1S heterodimerizes with NK1L, impairing Gαq coupling and Ca2+ mobilization while enhancing β‐arrestin1 recruitment. NK1S suppresses substance P‐driven gene expression and cell migration, revealing NK1S as an endogenous biased ...

Effects of White Turmeric Infusion on the Liver Cells in Carbon Tetrachloride-Induced Mice

open access: yesAlthea Medical Journal, 2015
Background: The liver is an organ that has important functions in the body. Liver damage can be caused by oxidative stress and free radicals. White turmeric (Curcuma zedoaria L) contains antioxidants that can be used to neutralize the effects of free ...

Loss of the actin remodeler Eps8 causes intestinal defects and improved metabolic status in mice. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
In a variety of organisms, including mammals, caloric restriction improves metabolic status and lowers the incidence of chronic-degenerative diseases, ultimately leading to increased lifespan.
