Two newborns of heroin-addicted mothers suffering neonatal withdrawal syndrome

open access: yesThe Turkish Journal of Pediatrics, 2012
Neonatal withdrawal syndrome is characterized by non-specific signs and symptoms that occur in infants following in-utero drug exposure. The incidence of neonatal withdrawal syndrome is 16-90% in infants of mothers abusing heroin.

Piezo2 Mediates a Vicious Cycle of “Mechanical Homeostasis Imbalance—Inflammation” in Sensory Nerves and the Cartilage Endplate

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
In a lumbar spine instability model, dorsal root ganglion cells mediate the perception of relevant mechanical stresses through Piezo2 and subsequently release CGRP. CGRP activates the NF‐κB signaling pathway in cartilage endplate cells through the receptor RAMP1.

Probiotics Alter the Microbial and Behavioral Consequences of Methamphetamine Exposure in a Sex-Selective Manner

open access: yesPsychoactives
Methamphetamine use disorder (MuD) is a global health problem, with no FDA-approved medications. Our prior work demonstrated that repeated methamphetamine exposure alters the gut microbiota in male rats and results in depressive-like behaviors.

A Central Somatic Transmission Mediates Proprioceptive Facilitation of Muscle Pain

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Zhang et al. uncover a novel central mechanism for persistent muscle pain, in which TRPA1 sensitization in MeV proprioceptive neurons enhances somatic secretion. This, in turn, disinhibits descending pain control from neighboring noradrenergic locus coeruleus neurons via local GABAergic circuits, thereby promoting inflammatory muscle pain.

Endogenous “Time Bomb” – Mislocalized Phospholipase A2 as a Critical Mediator of Ultra‐Rapid Mortality in Sepsis and Acute Lung Injury

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Phospholipase A2 (PLA2), a dormant enzyme, becomes lethal when activated—collapsing lungs in minutes. Our dual therapy (DOPS + varespladib) boosts survival from 0% to >90% in sepsis/ALI. A breakthrough for acute lung injury treatment. ABSTRACT This study reveals that phospholipase A2 (PLA2), normally stable and nontoxic, can be activated specifically ...

Challenges in the postsurgical recovery of cushing syndrome: glucocorticoid withdrawal syndrome

open access: yesFrontiers in Endocrinology
Glucocorticoid withdrawal syndrome is a challenging clinical phenomenon that can complicate the postsurgical recovery of Cushing syndrome. It is characterized by physical tolerance and dependence to supraphysiologic glucocorticoid exposure during active ...

Clinical management of gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) withdrawal delirium with CIWA-Ar protocol

open access: yesJournal of the Formosan Medical Association, 2018
Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) is a synthetic drug used mainly for recreational purpose. Although the prevalence of GHB abuse is low in Taiwan, GHB has become increasingly popular in certain subpopulations such as clubbers and men who have sex with men (MSM)

Deciphering and Targeting the Schwannoma‐Neuron‐Macrophage Crosstalk for the Treatment of Schwannomatosis and Associated Pain

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
We established patient‐derived SWN cell lines and orthotopic PDX models that recapitulate patient pain phenotypes, alongside a novel intravital DRG imaging platform to track macrophage infiltration and neuronal pain responses. Using these models, we define HMGB1–CCL2–IL‐6 signaling crosstalk driving pain and identify EGF signaling as a key regulator of

The Role of Medial Prefrontal Cortex and Ventral Tegmental Areas in Withdrawal Syndrome in Morphine Addicted Male Rats

open access: yesمجله دانشکده پزشکی اصفهان, 2020
Background: One of the problems of addiction treatment is the relapsing of withdrawal syndrome signs in the addicted person. Rewarding brain regions such as medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and ventral tegmental area (VTA) are involved in addiction and ...
