Orientation of xanthophylls in phosphatidylcholine multibilayers
Biochimica et Biophysica Acta (BBA) - Biomembranes, 1990Oriented multibilayers of dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine (DMPC) modified with violaxanthin or zeaxanthin were examined by X-ray diffractometry and linear dichroism. It appears that pigment molecules and the normal to the bilayer plane form an angle of 24-25 degrees.

Among them, lutein and zeaxanthin are the major carotenoids found in the human lens and retina, and referred as macular pigment within the retina. Lutein and zeaxanthin cannot be synthesized endogenously. They may therefore be considered as essential and must be provided by adequate dietary intakes.
