UV Radiation Induces Specific Changes in the Carotenoid Profile of Arabidopsis thaliana

open access: yesBiomolecules, 2022
UV-B and UV-A radiation are natural components of solar radiation that can cause plant stress, as well as induce a range of acclimatory responses mediated by photoreceptors.

Lutein and Zeaxanthin Content in 21 Plant Species from a Very Humid Premontane Forest in Colombia Palatable for Free-Range Laying Hens

open access: yesPlants, 2023
Xanthophylls, such as lutein and zeaxanthin, have several functions in both plants and humans, including detoxification of oxidants (reactive oxygen species (ROS) and other radicals), maintenance of the structural and functional integrity of biological ...

Xanthophyll Bioavailability in Dehydrated Turf Grass

open access: hybridPoultry Science, 1981
In a 16-day experiment involving 270 32-week-old laying hens, dehydrated turf grass (DTG) and corn gluten meal (CGM) were compared as xanthophyll sources for egg yolk pigmentation. Experimental diets were formulated to contain, 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 mg total xanthophyll/kg diet, provided as either DTG or CGM.

Effect of dietary xanthophyll level on body colour of goldfish (Carassius auratus)

open access: yes浙江大学学报. 农业与生命科学版, 2010
To investigate the effect of adding xanthophyll in diet on body colour of goldfish, six diets added with xanthophyll of 0 (control group), 50, 100, 150, 200, or 300 mg·kg-1 were prepared, and fed to goldfish with initial body mass of (7.8±0.3) g for 10 ...

Modified atmosphere packaging and dark/light refrigerated storage in green leafy vegetables have impact on nutritional value [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The consumption of zeaxanthin (Z) through a vegetable-rich diet is recommended to reduce the progression of age-related macular degeneration. Due to Z’s intrinsic dynamic character that results from its participation in the photoprotective xanthophyll ...

Evolutionary divergence of photoprotection in the green algal lineage: a plant‐like violaxanthin de‐epoxidase enzyme activates the xanthophyll cycle in the green alga Chlorella vulgaris modulating photoprotection

open access: yesNew Phytologist, 2020
Summary The xanthophyll cycle is the metabolic process by which the carotenoid violaxanthin is de‐epoxidated to zeaxanthin, a xanthophyll with a crucial photoprotective role in higher plants and mosses.

Overexpression of beta-carotene hydroxylase enhances stress tolerance in Arabidopsis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
Plant stress caused by extreme environmental conditions is already a principal reason for yield reduction in crops. The threat of global environment change makes it increasingly important to generate crop plants that will withstand such conditions ...
