The Macular Xanthophylls

The macular pigments are predominantly composed of three carotenoids: lutein, zeaxanthin, and meso-zeaxanthin. These carotenoids are concentrated and distributed in a selective manner. The properties of these pigments are further explored along with their methods of uptake, stabilization, and storage.

Analysis of Xanthophylls in Corn by HPLC

An HPLC method was developed using the C-30 carotenoid column to separate and identify the major xanthophylls in corn (lutein, zeaxanthin, and beta-cryptoxanthin). A photodiode array detector and a mobile phase consisting of methyl tert-butyl ether/methanol/water was used. All three xanthophylls eluted in less than 25 min.

Carotenol fatty acid esters in various fruits and vegetables are sources of carotenoids for humans and are cleaved during intestinal absorption to yield the parent xanthophyll. In the present study we demonstrate that low amounts of carotenol esters are present in human skin.

Orientation of xanthophylls in phosphatidylcholine multibilayers

Oriented multibilayers of dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine (DMPC) modified with violaxanthin or zeaxanthin were examined by X-ray diffractometry and linear dichroism. It appears that pigment molecules and the normal to the bilayer plane form an angle of 24-25 degrees.
