Design and performance characterisation of the HAPG von Hámos Spectrometer at the High Energy Density Instrument of the European XFEL

open access: yesJournal of Instrumentation, 2020
The von Hámos spectrometer setup at the HED instrument of the European XFEL is described in detail. The spectrometer is designed to be operated primarily between 5 and 15 keV to complement the operating photon energy range of the HED instrument.

Pr and Pfr structures of plant phytochrome A

open access: yesNature Communications
Phytochromes are biliprotein photoreceptors widespread amongst microorganisms and ubiquitous in plants where they control developmental processes as diverse as germination, stem elongation and floral induction through the photoconversion of inactive Pr ...

THE EUROPEAN XFEL PROJECT

open access: yes, 2007
The European XFEL will be a free electron laser based on self amplified spontaneous emission in the X-ray regime. The FEL is driven by a superconducting 17.5 GeV linear accelerator, followed by 5 separate undulators both for SASE FEL radiation and incoherent radiation. Start of operation is foreseen for 2013.

Absolute scaling of small‐ and wide‐angle X‐ray scattering images recorded with short duration X‐ray pulses on a large area fiber‐taper X‐ray detector

open access: yesJournal of Synchrotron Radiation, Volume 33, Issue 3, Page 562-579, May 2026.
An X‐ray scattering setup designed to capture small‐ and wide‐angle X‐ray scattering on a single, large area detector features a partially transmissive beamstop that facilitates non‐invasive recording of X‐ray beam position and intensity during acquisition of X‐ray scattering images.

High-Brightness Beam Technology Development for a Future Dynamic Mesoscale Materials Science Capability

open access: yesInstruments, 2019
A future capability in dynamic mesoscale materials science is needed to study the limitations of materials under irreversible and extreme conditions, where these limitations are caused by nonuniformities and defects in the mesoscale.

Demonstration of a diamond anvil cell platform at the Linac Coherent Light Source: capabilities and outlook

open access: yesJournal of Synchrotron Radiation, Volume 33, Issue 3, Page 552-561, May 2026.
A setup for fielding high‐pressure samples contained in diamond anvil cells (DACs) at the LCLS X‐ray free electron laser is described and example powder X‐ray diffraction data are presented. Future prospects for experimental capabilities in DACs enabled by the LCLS, such as short pulse laser interactions and multiple pulse modes, are discussed.A novel ...
