Structure and allostery in major facilitator superfamily symport mechanisms. [PDF]

open access: yesActa Crystallogr D Struct Biol
Conformational dynamics in the melibiose/Na+ cotransporter MelB significantly influence the binding of the primary sugar substrate but have minimal effect on the co‐substrate Na+. Na+ acts as an allosteric activator, increasing sugar affinity by stabilizing the inner barrier and constraining conformational flexibility. The solute carriers of the major ...

Beyond Gut Modulation: A Critical Review of the Therapeutic Potential, Safety, and Clinical Prospects of Natural Polysaccharides for IBD

open access: yesFood Safety and Health, EarlyView.
In this review, we critically summarized the application of natural polysaccharides (NPs) for the treatment of IBD. This approach combines, in a unique way (right), the basic structure–activity relationships of NPs from different origins (left) with their multipronged mode of action, which involves modulation of the gut microbiota and other ...

Identification and characterization of putative xylose and cellobiose transporters in Aspergillus nidulans [PDF]

open access: yesBiotechnology for Biofuels, 2016

Signature pathway expression of xylose utilization in the genetically engineered industrial yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2018
Haploid laboratory strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae are commonly used for genetic engineering to enable their xylose utilization but little is known about the industrial yeast which is often recognized as diploid and as well as haploid and tetraploid.

Structural and biochemical insights of xylose MFS and SWEET transporters in microbial cell factories: challenges to lignocellulosic hydrolysates fermentation

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology
The production of bioethanol from lignocellulosic biomass requires the efficient conversion of glucose and xylose to ethanol, a process that depends on the ability of microorganisms to internalize these sugars.

Antimicrobial bilayer starch film containing zein electrospun fibers encapsulating thyme essential oil for cherry tomato packaging

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract Background This study evaluated the antimicrobial activity of thyme essential oil (TEO) encapsulated in electrospun zein fibers for use in bilayer films as active packaging for cherry tomatoes. The antimicrobial activity of TEO and bilayer films with 20%, 40%, and 60% TEO was assessed with agar diffusion and microatmosphere assays.

Enhanced protopanaxadiol production from xylose by engineered Yarrowia lipolytica

open access: yesMicrobial Cell Factories, 2019
Background As renewable biomass, lignocellulose remains one of the major choices for most countries in tackling global energy shortage and environment pollution. Efficient utilization of xylose, an important monosaccharide in lignocellulose, is essential
