The transformer gene controls sexual development in Drosophila suzukii
The transformer gene plays a key role in the genetic pathway for sexual development in Drosophila suzukii Abstract The genetic network of sex determination in the model organism Drosophila melanogaster was investigated in great detail. Such knowledge not only advances our understanding of the evolution and regulation of sexual dimorphism in insects ...

Development and growth of hatchery-reared larval Florida pompano (Trachinotus carolinus) [PDF]
Although the Florida pompano (Trachinotus carolinus) is a prime candidate for aquaculture, the problematic production of juveniles remains a major impediment to commercial culture of this species.

Chromosome‐scale genome assembly of the South American fruit fly, Anastrepha fraterculus sp.1
Anastrepha fraterculus sp. 1 is a major fruit fly pest in Argentina, currently controlled through chemical treatments and traps. This study aims to enhance the genomic understanding of this species to support the development of sterile insect technique as well as the use of innovative technologies.

The Embryonic Development of the Cotylean Polyclad Phrikoceros jannetae
ABSTRACT Polyclads exhibit distinct developmental modes ranging from direct to indirect development, with several transitional stages also recognised. The existence of an indirect developmental mode in polyclads with a planktonic life history stage in the form of a free‐swimming larva is unique among all free‐living flatworms and makes polyclads a ...

β-Apo-8′-Carotenal as an Egg Yolk Pigmenter
Abstract β -APO-8′-carotenal has been shown to be an effective pigmenter for coloring egg yolks in vivo (Steinegger et al., 1957; Bunnell and Bauernfeind, 1958; Bauernfeind and Marusich, 1959; Marusich et al., 1960a). It has also been shown to possess vitamin A activity (Euler et al., 1938; Glover and Redfearn, 1954).

Zebrafish Tgds, when expressed as a recombinant protein, catalyzes the dehydration of UDP‐D‐glucose, the initial step in the formation of 6‐deoxyhexoses. Corresponding Tgds mutations found in Catel–Manzke syndrome patients lead to reduced enzymatic activity and stability.

The Transfer of Carotinoid Pigments to the Egg Yolk
Abstract EARLY work of Palmer and Kempster (1919 a, b) indicated that no carotinoid pigment other than that in the feed was deposited in the yolk. Some pigment continued to be deposited in the yolks from hens on a diet of extremely low carotinoid content. These workers concluded that such residual pigment was not carotinoid in nature and the quantity

Characters aiding in the identification of eggs and larvae of major groups [PDF]
The various characters of the eggs, larvae, postlarvae of marine fishes as summarised by Ahlstrom and Moser (1976) may be considered group-wise, as follows. A perusal of the publications by Russell (1976), Jones, Martin and Hardy Jr. (1978), Fritsche (

Reproduction, early development, and larval rearing strategies for two sponge-dwelling neon gobies, Elacatinus lori and E.colini [PDF]
A major goal of the aquaculture industry is to reduce collection pressure on wild populations by developing captive breeding techniques for marine ornamental species, particularly coral reef fishes.

Reproduction and embryonic development of monkeyface prickleback Cebidichthys violaceus in captivity
Abstract Understanding the sequence of embryonic and larval development and the factors necessary to induce reproduction in captivity are critical for developing new species for commercial or conservation aquaculture. In this study, we describe the adult reproductive behaviours and development of eggs, embryos and early larvae of captive monkeyface ...
