Poly(A)-specific ribonuclease is a nuclear ribosome biogenesis factor involved in human 18S rRNA maturation

open access: yesNucleic Acids Research, 2017
The poly-A specific ribonuclease (PARN), initially characterized for its role in mRNA catabolism, supports the processing of different types of non-coding RNAs including telomerase RNA. Mutations in PARN are linked to dyskeratosis congenita and pulmonary

Two Species of Canine Babesia in Australia: Detection and Characterization by PCR [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
The haemoprotozoan Babesia canis has been recognized in Australia for many years, and a second, smaller species has recently been discovered. Amplification and sequencing of a partial region of the 18S small subunit ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene enabled ...

5′‐Cleavage site of D. melanogaster 18 S rRNA

open access: yesFEBS Letters, 1984
We determined the nucleotide sequence of the DNA region around the 5′‐terminus of 18 S rRNA in two cloned rDNA gene units of Drosophila melanogaster. The 5′‐base is within a sequence CATTATT which is present also at the 3′‐terminus of the 18 S rRNA coding region. In this case it is known that the situation is CATTA3′ · TT.

Origin of the Mesozoa inferred from 18S rRNA gene sequences [PDF]

open access: yesMolecular Biology and Evolution, 1996
The phylum Mesozoa comprises small, simply organized wormlike parasites of marine invertebrates and is composed of two classes, the Rhombozoa and the Orthonectida. The origin of Mesozoa is uncertain; they are classically considered either as degenerate turbellarians or as primitive multicellular animals related to ciliated protists.

An 18S rRNA Workflow for Characterizing Protists in Sewage, with a Focus on Zoonotic Trichomonads

open access: yesMicrobial Ecology, 2017
Microbial eukaryotes (protists) are important components of terrestrial and aquatic environments, as well as animal and human microbiomes. Their relationships with metazoa range from mutualistic to parasitic and zoonotic (i.e., transmissible between ...

Identification of a novel methyltransferase, Bmt2, responsible for the N-1-methyl-adenosine base modification of 25S rRNA in "Saccharomyces cerevisiae" [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
The 25S rRNA of yeast contains several base modifications in the functionally important regions. The enzymes responsible for most of these base modifications remained unknown.

Arabidopsis RIBOSOMAL RNA PROCESSING7 Is Required for 18S rRNA Maturation [PDF]

open access: yesThe Plant Cell, 2018
Ribosome biogenesis is fundamental to growth and development in eukaryotes and is linked to human diseases and cancer. Arabidopsis thaliana MORPHOLOGY OF ARGONAUTE1-52 SUPPRESSED 2 (MAS2) participates in splicing and 45S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) expression.

A phylogenetic framework for the kingdom Fungi based on 18S rRNA gene sequences.

open access: yesMarine Genomics, 2017
The usage of molecular phylogenetic approaches is critical to advance the understanding of systematics and community processes in the kingdom Fungi. Among the possible phylogenetic markers (or combinations of them), the 18S rRNA gene appears currently as

18S rRNA V9 metabarcoding for diet characterization: a critical evaluation with two sympatric zooplanktivorous fish species

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2016
The potential of the 18S rRNA V9 metabarcoding approach for diet assessment was explored using MiSeq paired‐end (PE; 2 × 150 bp) technology. To critically evaluate the method′s performance with degraded/digested DNA, the diets of two zooplanktivorous ...
