ESF1 is required for 18S rRNA synthesis in Saccharomyces cerevisiae [PDF]

open access: yesNucleic Acids Research, 2004
We report that Esf1p (Ydr365cp), an essential, evolutionarily conserved nucleolar protein, is required for the biogenesis of 18S rRNA in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Depletion of Esf1p resulted in delayed processing of 35S precursor and a striking loss of 18S rRNA.

Characterization of the two intra-individual sequence variants in the 18S rRNA gene in the plant parasitic nematode, Rotylenchulus reniformis. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2013
The 18S rRNA gene is fundamental to cellular and organismal protein synthesis and because of its stable persistence through generations it is also used in phylogenetic analysis among taxa.

Beyond Blood Smears: Qualification of Plasmodium 18S rRNA as a Biomarker for Controlled Human Malaria Infections

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 2019
. 18S rRNA is a biomarker that provides an alternative to thick blood smears in controlled human malaria infection (CHMI) trials. We reviewed data from CHMI trials at non-endemic sites that used blood smears and Plasmodium 18S rRNA/rDNA biomarker nucleic

A Complete Expression Profile of Matrix-Degrading Metalloproteinases in Dupuytren’s Disease [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Dupuytren’s disease (DD) is a common fibrotic condition of the palmar fascia, leading to deposition of collagen-rich cords and finger contractions. The metzincin superfamily contains key enzymes in the turnover of collagen and other extracellular matrix ...

Partial methylation at Am100 in 18S rRNA of baker's yeast reveals ribosome heterogeneity on the level of eukaryotic rRNA modification.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
Ribosome heterogeneity is of increasing biological significance and several examples have been described for multicellular and single cells organisms.

Parasites and blood-meal hosts of the tsetse fly in Tanzania: a metagenomics study

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2022
Background Tsetse flies can transmit various Trypanosoma spp. that cause trypanosomiasis in humans, wild animals, and domestic animals. Amplicon deep sequencing of the 12S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene can be used to detect mammalian tsetse hosts, and the ...

Glycogen Synthase Kinase (GSK) 3β phosphorylates and protects nuclear myosin 1c from proteasome-mediated degradation to activate rDNA transcription in early G1 cells [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Nuclear myosin 1c (NM1) mediates RNA polymerase I (pol I) transcription activation and cell cycle progression by facilitating PCAF-mediated H3K9 acetylation, but the molecular mechanism by which NM1 is regulated remains unclear.

Synergistic interaction network between the snR30 RNP, Utp23, and ribosomal RNA during ribosome synthesis

open access: yesRNA Biology, 2022
snR30/U17 is a highly conserved H/ACA RNA that is required for maturation of the small ribosomal subunit in eukaryotes. By base-pairing to the expansion segment 6 (ES6) of 18S ribosomal RNA (rRNA), the snR30 H/ACA Ribonucleoprotein (RNP) indirectly ...

The pathway of hepatitis C virus mRNA recruitment to the human ribosome. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Eukaryotic protein synthesis begins with mRNA positioning in the ribosomal decoding channel in a process typically controlled by translation-initiation factors.
