27-hydroxycholesterol decreases cell proliferation in colon cancer cell lines

open access: yesBiochimie, 2018
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most diagnosed cancer in the western world, affecting 1 out of approximately 22 people in their lifetime. Several epidemiological studies suggest a positive association between high plasma cholesterol levels and colorectal cancer.

27-Hydroxycholesterol Promotes Adiposity and Mimics Adipogenic Diet-Induced Inflammatory Signaling [PDF]

open access: yesEndocrinology, 2019
Abstract 27-Hydroxycholesterol (27HC) is an abundant cholesterol metabolite and has detrimental effects on the cardiovascular system, whereas its impact on adiposity is not well known. In this study, we found that elevations in 27HC cause increased body weight gain in mice fed a high-fat/high-cholesterol diet in an estrogen receptor α ...

Pregnane X Receptor Regulates Human Endocrine System by Inducing Sex Hormone–Binding Globulin Expression

open access: yesBasic &Clinical Pharmacology &Toxicology, Volume 138, Issue 4, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Sex hormone–binding globulin (SHBG) is a sex hormone carrier. We aimed to characterize the role of pregnane X receptor (PXR), a major regulator of drug metabolism, in SHBG regulation. Serum SHBG was measured in four clinical trials (n = 61) and expression in in vitro experiments in human 3D hepatocyte spheroids and HepG2 cells.

Endogenous oestrogens as neuroprotective modulators in the human retina: Evidence from transcriptomic profiling and aromatase inhibition

open access: yesJournal of Neuroendocrinology, Volume 38, Issue 4, April 2026.
Single‐cell transcriptomics reveals that the human retina expresses a broad repertoire of steroid hormone biosynthesis and estrogen signalling genes. Functional validation in retinal explants shows that local estrogen synthesis is neuroprotective, preventing photoreceptor death and limiting microglial activation. Abstract Steroid hormones, particularly

Resilient Calvarial Bone Marrow Supports Retinal Repair in Type 2 Diabetes

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 13, 3 March 2026.
Skull bone (calvarium) marrow in diabetic mice stay structurally intact and keeps making blood cells, unlike the bone marrow of the leg bones. The skull marrow is exposed to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which contains protective molecules called oxysterols.

Serum cholestenoic acid as a potential marker of pulmonary cholesterol homeostasis

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2004
The conversion of cholesterol into the more polar metabolites 27-hydroxycholesterol (27-OH) and cholestenoic acid by the cytochrome P450 sterol 27-hydroxylase is a cholesterol-removal mechanism used by almost all cells.

4β-Hydroxycholesterol Signals From the Liver to Regulate Peripheral Cholesterol Transporters

open access: yesFrontiers in Pharmacology, 2020
Activation of pregnane X receptor (PXR) elevates circulating 4β-hydroxycholesterol (4βHC), an agonist of liver X receptor (LXR). PXR may also regulate 25-hydroxycholesterol and 27-hydroxycholesterol.

Integration of single‐cell and bulk transcriptomics reveals the association of manganese metabolism‐related genes with prognosis and immune infiltration in lung adenocarcinoma

open access: yesClinical &Translational Immunology, Volume 15, Issue 3, 2026.
This study developed a prognostic model for lung adenocarcinoma using manganese metabolism‐related genes (MRGs). Nine key MRGs were identified via multi‐omics and LASSO‐Cox analyses to calculate a risk score. The model showed robust predictive performance in both training and validation cohorts.

Increased maternal and fetal cholesterol efflux capacity and placental CYP27A1 expression in preeclampsia[S]

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 2017
Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-specific condition that leads to increased cardiovascular risk in later life. A decrease in cholesterol efflux capacity is linked to CVD.
