FMT intervention decreases urine 5-HIAA levels: a randomized double-blind controlled study

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine
BackgroundAutism spectrum disorder (ASD) is often linked to gastrointestinal issues and altered serotonin metabolism. Emerging evidence suggests gut microbiota influence both, with fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) offering a potential therapeutic ...

Efficacy of Acupuncture in Alleviating Negative Emotions in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesBrain and Behavior, Volume 15, Issue 12, December 2025.
This meta‐analysis of seven RCTs (n = 489) demonstrates that acupuncture significantly improves depression scores, hirsutism, and BMI in PCOS patients, though anxiety symptoms show no significant improvement. Evidence quality is low, warranting cautious interpretation. ABSTRACT Introduction Preliminary studies have indicated that acupuncture may play a

The correlation between urinary 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid and sperm quality in infertile men and rotating shift workers

open access: yesReproductive Biology and Endocrinology, 2010
Background Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that modulates a wide range of neuroendocrine functions. However, excessive circulating serotonin levels may induce harmful effects in the male reproductive system.

Generation of Pseudo Metabolites as a Side Reaction in On‐Tissue Chemical Derivatization in Matrix‐Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry Imaging

open access: yesChemistry–Methods, Volume 5, Issue 12, November 2025.
On‐tissue chemical derivatization reagents enhance sensitivity and specificity, but the impact of side reactions remains understudied. The reactive matrix FMP‐10 promotes Mukaiyama‐like condensation reactions between endogenous metabolites to form pseudo metabolites that are structurally identical to endogenous metabolites.

Boosting Serotonin Synthesis Is Not Sufficient to Improve Motor Coordination of Mecp2 Heterozygous Mouse Model of Rett Syndrome

open access: yesBiomolecules
Motor deficit is a core symptom of Rett syndrome, a rare neurological disease caused in most cases by mutations of the methyl-CpG-binding protein2 (MECP2) gene. Serotonin reuptake inhibitors improve motor coordination in Mecp2 heterozygous (Het) mice and

Neurotransmitters and Immunity: Molecular Mechanisms, Biological Functions, Diseases, and Potential Therapeutic Targets

open access: yesMedComm, Volume 6, Issue 12, December 2025.
Role of neurotransmitters in multiple pathological processes. Various neurotransmitters, including ACh, EPI, NE, 5‐HT, histamine, DA, glutamate, GABA, and neuropeptides participate in regulating key pathological events, including tumor proliferation, tumor migration, remodeling of the immune microenvironment, and the development of NDDs and ...

Tryptophan derivatives as non‐invasive diagnostic indicators for obesity‐related MASLD in children and adolescents

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, Volume 27, Issue 12, Page 7544-7560, December 2025.
Abstract Aims Metabolic dysfunction‐associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) represents a major health burden in children and adolescents with obesity. This study aimed to characterize metabolic alterations associated with obesity‐related MASLD and to evaluate the potential of tryptophan (TRP)‐derived metabolites as non‐invasive biomarkers for early ...

Renal Handling of 5-Hydroxyindoleacetic Acid in the Dog.

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine, 1965
SummaryThe renal clearance of 5-HIAA at low plasma concentrations in the dog averaged 143 ± 7.8 ml/min/M2 with simultaneous creatinine and sodium iodohippurate I131 clearances of 66 ± 3.6 and 223 ± 20 ml/min/M2, respectively. Probenecid administration resulted in a marked depression of the 5-HIAA clearance.
