Environmental fate of tire-rubber related pollutants 6PPD and 6PPD-Q: A review

Environmental Research
To enhance tire durability, the antioxidant N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD) is used in rubber, but it converts into the toxic 6PPD quinone (6PPD-Q) when exposed to oxidants like ozone (O3), causing ecological concerns. This review synthesizes the existing data to assess the transformation, bioavailability, and potential ...

Environmental concentrations of 6PPD and 6PPD-Q cause oxidative damage and alter metabolism in Eichhornia crassipes

Science of the Total Environment
N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N '-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine (6PPD) and N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine-quinone (6PPD-Q) are ubiquitous in the environment and can cause toxicity to aquatic animals. However, research on the toxicological effects of 6PPD and 6PPD-Q on aquatic plants remains limited.

Responses of soil and collembolan (Folsomia candida) gut microbiomes to 6PPD-Q pollution

Science of The Total Environment, 2023
The potential risk of N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine quinone (6PPD-Q) to soil organisms remains poorly understood. Here we showed that 6PPD-Q pollution inhibited the survival of collembolans (Folsomia candida) with the chronic median lethal concentration (LC50) of 16.31 μg kg-1 in a 28-day soil culture.

Policy recommendations for tire additive 6PPD and its derivative 6PPD-Q

open access: yes
Around 3.1 billion tires are produced around the world annually1. The antioxidant additive, 6PPD (i.e., N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N’-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine) is widely employed in passenger and commercial vehicle tires at 0.4-2% by mass to impede tire ...

Explore the toxicological mechanism of 6PPD-Q on human health through a novel perspective: The interaction between lactate dehydrogenase and 6PPD-Q

International Journal of Biological Macromolecules
N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine-quinone (6PPD-Q), an oxidative derivative of tire anti-degradant, has been linked to mortality in coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and has exhibited potential human toxicity. Hence, exploring how 6PPD-Q interacts with biomacromolecules like enzymes is indispensable to assess its human toxicity and ...
