Cocaine induces a mixed lysosomal lipidosis in cultured fibroblasts, by inactivation of acid sphingomyelinase and inhibition of phospholipase A1

open access: yes, 2004
This paper reports that cocaine may induce a lysosomal storage disorder. Indeed, culture of Rat-1 fibroblasts with 250-500 microM cocaine induced after 2-3 days a major accumulation in lysosomes of electron-dense lamellar structures.

Lysosomal sphingomyelinase is not solicited for apoptosis signaling

open access: yes, 2000
International audienceABSTRACT Stress‐induced activation of an acidic sphingomyelinase leading to generation of ceramide, an important lipid mediator, has been associated with apoptosis; however, the implication of this hydrolase has been questioned. The

Features of liver damage in Niemann — Pick disease type A, A/B and B (deficiency of acidic sphingomyelinase)

open access: yesЛечащий Врач
Background. Acid sphingomyelinase deficiency (Niemann – Pick disease) leads to the intracellular accumulation of sphingomyelin within the mononuclear phagocyte system, including liver, spleen, lungs and bone marrow.

Gentamicin Targets Acid Sphingomyelinase in Cancer: The Case of the Human Gastric Cancer NCI-N87 Cells

open access: yes, 2019
Emerging literature implicates acid sphingomyelinase in tumor sensitivity/resistance to anticancer treatments. Gentamicin is a drug commonly used as an antimicrobial but its serendipity effects have been shown.

Acid sphingomyelinase is involved in CEACAM receptor-mediated phagocytosis of Neisseria gonorrhoeae

open access: yes, 2000
The interaction with human phagocytes is a hallmark of symptomatic Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections. Gonococcal outer membrane proteins of the Opa family induce the opsoninindependent uptake of the bacteria that relies on CEACAM receptors and an active ...

Receiver operating characteristics curve (ROC) analysis of acid sphingomyelinase serum activity.

open access: yes, 2014
ROC analyses were performed at all three time points: PCTbefore (fine dashed line), PCTpeak (dashed line), and PCTlow (solid line). ROC curves statistically significant different from 0.5 are marked with an asterisk (*).

Olipudase alfa enzyme replacement therapy. One-year outcomes in an adult patient with acid sphingomyelinase deficiency type B [PDF]

open access: yes
Introduction: Acid Sphingomyelinase Deficiency (ASMD) is a rare autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder caused by variants in the SMPD1 gene, leading to a deficiency in the activity of sphingomyelinase (ASM) that catabolizes sphingomyelin (SPM ...
