High flow nasal cannula versus noninvasive ventilation in the treatment of acute hypercapnic respiratory failure: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

open access: yesThe Clinical Respiratory Journal, 2023
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease can lead to acute hypercapnic respiratory failure (AHRF), often treated using noninvasive ventilation (NIV). Emerging research suggests the potential utility of high flow nasal cannula (HFNC) for AHRF.

GPR68 Mediates Lung Endothelial Dysfunction Caused by Bacterial Inflammation and Tissue Acidification

open access: yesCells
Tissue acidification resulting from dysregulated cellular bioenergetics accompanies various inflammatory states. GPR68, along with other members of proton-sensing G protein-coupled receptors, responds to extracellular acidification and has been ...

Muscle fatigue, bioenergetic responses and metabolic economy during load‐ and velocity‐based maximal dynamic contractions in young and older adults

open access: yesPhysiological Reports, 2023
We evaluated whether task‐dependent, age‐related differences in muscle fatigue (contraction‐induced decline in normalized power) develop from differences in bioenergetics or metabolic economy (ME; mass‐normalized work/mM ATP).

The role of neutrophilia in hyperlactatemia, blood acidosis, impaired oxygen transport, and mortality outcome in critically ill COVID-19 patients

open access: yesFrontiers in Molecular Biosciences
IntroductionCOVID-19 severity and high in-hospital mortality are often associated with severe hypoxemia, hyperlactatemia, and acidosis, yet the key players driving this association remain unclear.

A Novel Model of Cancer Drug Resistance: Oncosomal Release of Cytotoxic and Antibody-Based Drugs

open access: yesBiology, 2020
Extracellular vesicles (EVs), such as exosomes or oncosomes, often carry oncogenic molecules derived from tumor cells. In addition, accumulating evidence indicates that tumor cells can eject anti-cancer drugs such as chemotherapeutics and targeted drugs ...

Reduced Muscular Carnosine in Proximal Myotonic Myopathy—A Pilot 1H‐MRS Study

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Myotonic dystrophy type 2 (proximal myotonic myopathy, PROMM) is a progressive multisystem disorder with muscular symptoms (proximal weakness, pain, myotonia) and systemic manifestations such as diabetes mellitus, cataracts, and cardiac arrhythmias.

Randomized preclinical study of machine perfusion in vascularized composite allografts

open access: yesBJS (British Journal of Surgery), EarlyView., 2020
This study was designed to identify the optimum machine perfusion parameters for preservation of limbs before transplantation, and determine whether this was better than cold storage. Normothermic machine perfusion at a pressure of 70 mmHg (NMP‐70) provided superior preservation to cold storage after transplantation.
