Risk factors for lactic acidosis and severe hyperlactataemia in HIV-1-infected adults exposed to antiretroviral therapy.

open access: yes, 2007
BACKGROUND: Severe hyperlactataemia and lactic acidosis are rare serious complications of antiretroviral therapy (ART). METHODS: Lactic acidosis was defined as pH 5 mmol/l.

Loss of proton‐sensing TDAG8 increases tumor progression in mouse models of colon cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Loss of the pH‐sensing receptor TDAG8 accelerates colorectal cancer progression in mice. Animals lacking TDAG8 expression had increased tumor growth, DNA damage, and recruitment of tumor‐associated immune cells, including macrophages, neutrophils, and monocytes.

Joint Acidosis and Acid-Sensing Receptors and Ion Channels in Osteoarthritis Pathobiology and Therapy

open access: yesCells
Osteoarthritis (OA) lacks disease-modifying therapies, in part because key features of the joint microenvironment remain underappreciated. One such feature is localized acidosis, characterized by sustained reductions in extracellular pH within the ...

Sodium bicarbonate to improve physical function in patients over 60 years with advanced chronic kidney disease: the BiCARB RCT

open access: yesHealth Technology Assessment, 2020
Background: Advanced chronic kidney disease is common in older people and is frequently accompanied by metabolic acidosis. Oral sodium bicarbonate is used to treat this acidosis, but evidence is lacking on whether or not this provides a net gain in ...

Severe Prolonged SGLT2i-induced Euglycemic Diabetic Ketoacidosis Refractory to Standard Therapy and Dialysis: Case Report and Literature Review

open access: yesOman Medical Journal, 2022
Sodium-glucose cotransporter type 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) are oral hypoglycemic agents that have insulin-independent glucose-lowering effects mediated by increasing the renal excretion of glucose by inhibiting the SGLT2-mediated renal glucose reabsorption.

Molecular dynamics simulations of positively selected codons in FcγRI reveal novel biochemical binding properties

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Evolutionary analysis across 32 placental mammals identified positive selection at residues H148 and W149 in the immune receptor FcγR1. Ancestral reconstruction combined with molecular dynamics simulations reveals how these mutations may influence receptor structure and dynamics, providing insight into the evolution of antibody recognition and immune ...
