Characterization of Cre recombinase activity for in vivo targeting of adipocyte precursor cells. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The increased incidence of obesity and metabolic disease underscores the importance of elucidating the biology of adipose tissue development. The recent discovery of cell surface markers for prospective identification of adipose precursor cells (APCs) in

Brown Adipocyte Focus [PDF]

open access: yesCell Metabolism, 2010
We are pleased to present in this issue of Cell Metabolism a review series on brown adipocytes. Until recently, brown adipose tissue (BAT) was principally studied by a handful of investigators focused on rodents and newborn mammals, and, at times, their work was deemed more an exercise in scientific curiosity than an issue relevant to human health.

Metformin promotes mitochondrial integrity through AMPK‐signaling in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Metformin mediates mitochondrial quality control in Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) fibroblasts carrying mtDNA mutations. At therapeutic levels, metformin activates AMPK signaling to restore mitochondrial dynamics by promoting fusion and restraining fission, while preserving mitochondrial mass, enhancing autophagy/mitophagy and biogenesis ...

Pioglitazone plus (−)‐epigallocatechin gallate: a novel approach to enhance osteogenic performance in aged bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Aged human bmMSCs are seeded in the scaffold. Osteoblastic induction can slightly increase cell's bone‐forming activity to produce bone‐like tissues, shown as the sporadic xylenol orange‐stained spots (the lower left image). Notably, pioglitazone plus EGCG co‐treatment dramatically increases cell's bone‐forming activity and bone‐like tissue production (

Insulin prevents fatty acid induced increase of adipocyte size

open access: yesAdipocyte, 2022
Metabolic disorders related to obesity are largely dependent on adipose tissue hypertrophy, which involves adipocyte hypertrophy and increased adipogenesis.

Fighting obesity by targeting factors regulating beige adipocytes. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Purpose of reviewThe current review provides an update on secreted factors and mechanisms that promote a thermogenic program in beige adipocytes, and their potential roles as therapeutic targets to fight obesity.Recent findingsWe outline recent studies ...

Early‐life high‐fat diet exposure increases Achilles tendon stiffness and induces transcriptomic alterations

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Early‐life exposure to a high‐fat diet altered intact Achilles tendons in rat offspring, making them thinner, stiffer, and molecularly distinct even without injury. These findings suggest that developmental high‐fat diet exposure may impair tendon quality and increase susceptibility to mechanical overload or tendon injury later in life.

Brd4 binds to active enhancers to control cell identity gene induction in adipogenesis and myogenesis

open access: yesNature Communications, 2017
Despite being an important cancer drug target, the role of epigenetic reader Brd4 in cell differentiation and development remains unclear. Here, the authors provide evidence that Brd4 plays an important role in adipogenesis and myogenesis by binding to ...

Triacylglycerol synthesis in rat adipose tissue : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Biochemistry at Massey University [PDF]

open access: yes, 1983
Adipose tissue consists of two types of cell; the adipocyte and the non-adipocyte {Rodbell, 1964). The adipocyte is unique amongst mammalian cell types in that one class of component {TG) comprises up to 80% of its weight.
