Associations between adiposity, diabetes, lifestyle factors and the risk of gliomas

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine, 2023
BackgroundDespite numerous observational studies linking adiposity, diabetes, and lifestyle factors with gliomas, the causal associations between them remain uncertain.MethodsThis study aimed to use two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to ...

Inflammatory Markers in Pediatric Obesity: Health and Physical Activity Implications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
The prevalence of childhood obesity has recently peaked in the USA with ~17% of children considered obese. With the increase in adiposity that occurs with weight gain, a persistent low-grade inflammatory state is created.

Ethnic specific obesity cut-offs for diabetes risk: cross-sectional study of 490, 288 UK Biobank participants [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
OBJECTIVE To compare the relationship between adiposity and prevalent diabetes across ethnic groups in the UK Biobank cohort and to derive ethnic-specific obesity cutoffs that equate to those developed in white populations in terms of diabetes prevalence.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Associations of fatty acids composition and estimated desaturase activities in erythrocyte phospholipids with biochemical and clinical indicators of cardiometabolic risk in non-diabetic Serbian women: the role of level of adiposity

open access: yesFrontiers in Nutrition, 2023
IntroductionFatty acids (FAs) composition and desaturase activities can be altered in different metabolic conditions, but the adiposity-independent associations with clinical and biochemical indicators of cardiometabolic risk are still unclear.

Impact of age and race on outcomes of a program to prevent excess weight gain and disordered eating in adolescent girls [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) prevents weight gain and reduces loss-of-control (LOC)-eating in adults. However, IPT was not superior to health-education (HE) for preventing excess weight gain and reducing LOC-eating over 1-year in adolescent girls at

Indices of Adiposity [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Epidemiology & Community Health, 1962
In a clinical context, the term "overweight" usually connotes adiposity, an excess of body fat. In the absence of any direct or simple indirect methods of measuring total body fat, medical research workers often use formulae (indices) which relate body weight to stature.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Cord Blood Vitamin D Levels and Early Childhood Blood Pressure: The Healthy Start Study

open access: yesJournal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease, 2019
Background Vitamin D deficiency is associated with cardiovascular events among adults, but it is unclear whether early‐life vitamin D deficiency influences cardiovascular risk factors in children. Methods and Results We measured total and bioavailable 25‐
