Estimation of additive genetic variance when there are gene–environment correlations: Pitfalls, solutions and unexplored questions

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 5, Page 1245-1258, May 2023., 2023
Abstract Estimating the genetic variation underpinning a trait is crucial to understanding and predicting its evolution. A key statistical tool to estimate this variation is the animal model. Typically, the environment is modelled as an external variable independent of the organism, affecting the focal phenotypic trait via phenotypic plasticity.

Emerging stability of forest productivity by mixing two species buffers temperature destabilizing effect

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 59, Issue 11, Page 2730-2741, November 2022., 2022
This study highlights the emergent properties associated with mixing two‐species, which result in resource efficient and temporally stable production systems. We reveal the negative impact of mean temperature on temporal stability of forest productivity and how the stabilizing effect of mixing two species can counterbalance this impact.

Trait functional diversity explains mixture effects on litter decomposition at the arid end of a climate gradient

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 110, Issue 9, Page 2219-2231, September 2022., 2022
Litter mixing did not have strong effects on decomposition rates across the studied climatic gradient overall, and the direction and intensity of the mixture effects were context dependent. The effects were stronger and more negative in the dryer ecosystems.

Antifungal properties of whey fermented by lactic acid bacteria in films for the preservation of cheese slices

open access: yesInternational Journal of Dairy Technology, Volume 75, Issue 3, Page 619-629, August 2022., 2022
Workflow to develop an active film with LAB‐fermented whey for a novel application as a biopreservative of cheese. Fungal deterioration by Penicillium species in refrigerated storage conditions is one of the main risk factors for health issues and food waste in the dairy industry. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antifungal properties of a

Evaluation of the effects of chlorhexidine digluconate with and without cBD103 or cCath against multidrug‐resistant clinical isolates of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius

open access: yesVeterinary Dermatology, Volume 33, Issue 1, Page 17-e6, February 2022., 2022
Background – Because of the increased incidence of multidrug‐resistant (MDR) bacteria, the use of disinfectants over antibiotics has been encouraged. However, the interactions between disinfectants and host local immunity are poorly understood. Objective – To assess the effects of chlorhexidine digluconate (Chx), with and without selected host defence ...

A multispecies assessment of wildlife impacts on local community livelihoods

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 35, Issue 1, Page 297-306, February 2021., 2021
Abstract Conflicts between the interests of agriculture and wildlife conservation are a major threat to biodiversity and human well‐being globally. Addressing such conflicts requires a thorough understanding of the impacts associated with living alongside protected wildlife.

The use of natural pigments in the treatment of leathers: identification under electronic microscopy (SEM-EDX) in experimental Stone tools [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
