Binding of aflatoxin B1 to melanin

Food and Chemical Toxicology, 1988
Whole-body autoradiography of pigmented C57BL mice injected with 3H-labelled aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) showed a high degree of labelling of melanin-containing tissues, such as the melanin of eyes and hair follicles. The corresponding tissues in albino NMRI mice contained only low amounts of the label. Liquid chromatography of extracts of pigmented mouse eyes

Mitochondrial toxicity of aflatoxin B1

2023
This chapter discusses the toxicity of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) on mitochondrial function. It starts with an overview of aflatoxins: what they are, where they are found, and the types that exist. The introduction also describes the routes of AFB1 exposure, biotransformation, metabolism, and excretion. Thereafter, the chapter explains the major toxic effects

Antineoplastic Activity of Aflatoxin B1

Nature, 1968
THE aflatoxins, a group of related mycotoxins produced by Aspergillus flavus, have been extensively evaluated for biological activity. They are carcinogenic in animals1–5. The aflatoxin B1 fraction has been teratogenic in hamsters6, probably mutagenic in micro-organisms7 and caused chromosome breakage in mammalian cell cultures7,8.

Fungal degradation of aflatoxin B1

Natural Toxins, 1999
A number of fungal cultures were screened to select an organism suitable to be used in the detoxification of aflatoxin B1. They were co-cultured in Czapek-Dox-Casamino acid medium with aflatoxin B1 producing Aspergillus flavus. Several fungal cultures were found to prevent synthesis of aflatoxin B1 in liquid culture medium. Among these Phoma sp., Mucor

Effect of antiserum against aflatoxin B1-bovine serum albumin complex on aflatoxin B1-induced lysogenesis

Mutation Research Letters, 1988
Escherichia coli K12 bacteria lysogenic for the lambda phage were used to study the effect of antiserum against aflatoxin B1-induced lysogenesis. The antiserum was obtained from rabbits immunized with water in oil emulsion of aflatoxin B1-bovine serum albumin complex (AFB1-BSA).

Residues of aflatoxin B1 in broiler meat: Effect of age and dietary aflatoxin B1 levels

Food and Chemical Toxicology, 2010
This study describes the effect of dietary levels of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) and age of the birds upon the residue level in liver and muscles of broiler chicks. In three different experiments broiler chicks of 7, 14 and 28 days of age were kept for 7 days on contaminated rations having 1600, 3200 and 6400 μg/kg AFB1.

Fluorescence changes of aflatoxins B1 and G1

Zeitschrift für Lebensmittel-Untersuchung und -Forschung, 1975
The effects of various factors, such as pH, buffer, sodiumchloride and ultra-violet radiation on the fluorescence of aflatoxins B1 and G1 have been studied. The fluorescence characteristics of aflatoxins B1 and G1 underwent a marked change at pH values above 7.2.

In vitro aflatoxin B1-induced p53 mutations

Cancer Letters, 2003
The tumor suppressor gene p53 is commonly mutated with high frequencies at certain hot spots in human cancers. In liver cancers there is an especially high frequency of mutations at codon 249. To study the impact of carcinogen targeting and the role of cytosine methylation on the mutation spectrum, a common liver cancer carcinogen aflatoxin B1 (AFB1 ...

Aflatoxin B1 in hepatocellular carcinoma.

Tropical and geographical medicine, 1981
The aflatoxin B1 content of liver tissue was measured in patients who died from chronic liver disease [hepatocellular carcinoma (HCG) (5), schistosomal liver fibrosis (1), chronic aggressive hepatitis (1)] and compared with fifteen controls who died of motor traffic accidents (10), drowning (1), malnutrition (1), idiopathic cardiomegaly (1) and lung ...

Mutagenic effect of aflatoxin B1.

Annales de la nutrition et de l'alimentation, 1978
The present work aimed to study the mutagenic effect of aflatoxin B1 on human chromosomes. The experiments showed that aflatoxin B1 is a strong chromosome damaging agent. The treated cells showed a high rate of aberrations mainly breaks and interchanges.
