Synthesis and Antitumor Activity of Natural Compound Aloe Emodin Derivatives

open access: yesChemical Biology & Drug Design, 2014
In this study, we have synthesized novel water soluble derivatives of natural compound aloe emodin 4(a–j) by coupling with various amino acid esters and substituted aromatic amines, in an attempt to improve the anticancer activity and to explore the structure–activity relationships.

Aloe emodin inhibits the cytotoxic action of tumor necrosis factor

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Pharmacology, 2007
We demonstrate the capacity of an herbal anthraquinone aloe emodin to reduce the cytotoxicity of the proinflammatory cytokine tumor necrosis factor (TNF) towards L929 mouse fibrosarcoma and U251 human glioma cell lines. Aloe emodin inhibited both TNF-induced cell necrosis and apoptosis, but it did not reduce cell death induced by UV radiation or ...

Aloe-emodin-induced apoptosis in human gastric carcinoma cells

Food and Chemical Toxicology, 2007
The purpose of this study was to investigate the anticancer effect of aloe-emodin, an anthraquinone compound present in the leaves of Aloe vera, on two distinct human gastric carcinoma cell lines, AGS and NCI-N87. We demonstrate that aloe-emodin induced cell death in a dose- and time-dependent manner.

Modification of emodin and aloe-emodin by glycosylation in engineered Escherihia coli

World Journal of Microbiology and Biotechnology, 2015
Glycosyltransferase from Bacillus licheniformis DSM13 (YjiC) was used for enzymatic modification of emodin and aloe-emodin in vitro and in vivo. In order to increase the availability of UDP-glucose, three genes involved in the production of precursors of NDP-sugar in Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3) viz.

Antagonism of androgen receptor signaling by aloe-emodin

Food and Chemical Toxicology, 2023
Over the past decades, androgen receptor (AR) signaling has been a key driver of both primary and recurrent prostate cancer. In this work, aloe-emodin was identified as a novel AR antagonist, effectively inhibiting AR signaling. Firstly, aloe-emodin can inhibit LNCaP cell growth by promoting apoptosis. Then, the results of Western blot and quantitative

Photochemistry and Phototoxicity of Aloe Emodin¶

Photochemistry and Photobiology, 2002
Photochemical pathways leading to the phototoxicity of the aloe vera constituent aloe emodin were studied. The results indicate a photochemical mechanism involving singlet oxygen to be the most likely pathway responsible for the observed phototoxicity. Aloe emodin was found to efficiently generate singlet oxygen when irradiated with UV light (phidelta =

Evaluation of the anti-angiogenic effect of aloe-emodin

Cellular and Molecular Life Sciences, 2006
The present study identified aloe-emodin (AE, a hydroxyanthraquinone from Aloe vera and other plants) as a new anti-angiogenic compound with inhibitory effects in an in vivo angiogenesis assay and evaluates its effects on specific key steps of the angiogenic process.

Inhibition of CYP3A4 enhances aloe-emodin induced hepatocyte injury

Toxicology in Vitro, 2022
Aloe-emodin (AE) is a natural hydroxyanthraquinone derivative that was found in many medicinal plants and ethnic medicines. AE showed a wide array of pharmacological activities including anticancer, antifungal, laxative, antiviral, and antibacterial effects. However, increasing number of published studies have shown that AE may have some hepatotoxicity
