From ab initio quantum mechanics to molecular neurobiology: A cation-pi binding site in the nicotinic receptor [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
The nicotinic acetylcholine receptor is the prototype ligand-gated ion channel. A number of aromatic amino acids have been identified as contributing to the agonist binding site, suggesting that cation-pi interactions may be involved in binding the ...

Synergistic interaction of fatty acids and oxysterols impairs mitochondrial function and limits liver adaptation during nafld progression [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The complete mechanism accounting for the progression from simple steatosis to steatohepatitis in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has not been elucidated.

A methionine‐lined active site governs carbocation stabilization and product specificity in a bacterial terpene synthase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This study reveals a unique active site enriched in methionine residues and demonstrates that these residues play a critical role by stabilizing carbocation intermediates through novel sulfur–cation interactions. Structure‐guided mutagenesis further revealed variants with significantly altered product profiles, enhancing pseudopterosin formation. These

Preparation and characterization of 3-monohydroxylated bile acids of different side chain length and configuration at C-3. Novel approach to the synthesis of 24-norlithocholic acid.

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1986
A series of 3-monohydroxylated bile acids, in unlabeled and radioactive form, of varying side chain length and configuration at C-3 has been synthesized and rigorously characterized.

Dynamics of Isomerization of Hop Alpha-Acids and Transition of Hop Essential Oil Components in Beer

open access: yesActa Chimica Slovenica, 2020
Hops’ unique composition of essential oil components and bitter resins are crucial for beer aroma, which is important to consumers’ acceptance of beer. In this experiment the same wort was divided into four portions and each was hopped differently.

Fungal Peptaibiotics: Assessing Potential Meteoritic Amino Acid Contamination [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
The presence of non-protein alpha-dialkyl-amino acids such as alpha-aminoisobutyric acid (alpha-A1B) and isovaline (Iva), which are relatively rare in the terrestrial biosphere, has long been used as an indication of the indigeneity of meteoritic amino ...

Hyperosmotic stress induces PARP1‐mediated HPF1‐dependent mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Sorbitol‐induced hyperosmotic stress rapidly induces reversible mono(ADP‐ribosyl)ation (MARylation) on PARP1 without the signs of genotoxic signaling. We show that PARP1 autoMARylation is HPF1 dependent and forms hydroxylamine‐resistant O‐glycosidic linkages.

Bile salts of the coelacanth, Latimeria chalumnae.

open access: yesJournal of Lipid Research, 1984
Bile salts of the coelacanth, Latimeria chalumnae, Smith, have been analyzed and shown to have three bile alcohols, latimerol, 5 alpha-cyprinol, and 5 alpha-cholestane-3 beta, 7 alpha,-12 alpha,25,26-pentol, two C24 bile acids, chenodeoxycholic acid and ...

A transgenic Camelina sativa seed oil effectively replaces fish oil as a dietary source of eicosapentaenoic acid in mice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Background: Fish currently supplies only 40% of the eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) required to allow all individuals globally to meet the minimum intake recommendation of 500 mg/d.

Alpha-Linolenic Acid [PDF]

open access: yesCirculation, 2005
Although the fish-derived, long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (n-3 FA) may be considered “gifts from the sea” for cardiovascular health, the role of the land (or plant) -based n-3 FA α-linolenic acid (ALA) has been less clear. ALA is the 18-carbon, 3-double bond (C18:3n-3) precursor to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; C20:5n-3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA ...
