Metabolic Modulation of Bacterial Resistance to Alpha-Defensins

2017
Alpha-defensins are broad-spectrum antimicrobial peptides secreted by Paneth cells of the intestinal epithelium, as a part of host innate immune defense. However, specific groups of bacteria are able to inhabit the intestinal lumen despite the antimicrobial pressure exerted by alpha-defensins.

Synovial fluid alpha-defensins in Lyme arthritis—a useful marker

Folia Microbiologica
Lyme arthritis, one of the possible late manifestations of Lyme borreliosis, predominantly affects the supporting joints and in adults most often occurs in the form of monoarthritis of the knee. Early diagnosis is based on clinical findings and serology.

Alpha-defensins in the prevention of HIV transmission among breastfed infants.

Journal of acquired immune deficiency syndromes (1999), 2005
Alpha-defensins have been observed to have anti-HIV activity but have not been investigated in relation to mother-to-child HIV transmission. We measured the concentration of alpha-defensins in breast milk of HIV-positive mothers and tested whether the concentrations were associated with HIV transmission.

Paneth Cell α-Defensin Synthesis and Function

2006
Endogenous antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) mediate innate immunity in every species in which they have been investigated. Cathelicidins and defensins are the two major AMP families in mammals, and they are abundant components of phagocytic leukocytes and are released by epithelial cells at mucosal surfaces.
