Arthritogenic alphaviruses, including chikungunya (CHIKV), Ross River, and Mayaro viruses, are emerging global viruses responsible for causing arthralgia and chronic arthritis. Following mosquito-borne transmission, they quickly initiate infection in the skin, including in resident immune cells, and disseminate systemically into musculoskeletal tissues.
