Inflammatory monocytes mediate control of acute alphavirus infection in mice
Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) and Ross River virus (RRV) are mosquito-transmitted alphaviruses that cause debilitating acute and chronic musculoskeletal disease. Monocytes are implicated in the pathogenesis of these infections; however, their specific roles are not well defined.

The nonstructural protein NSs of Schmallenberg virus is targeted to the nucleolus and induces nucleolar disorganization [PDF]
Schmallenberg virus (SBV) was discovered in Germany in late 2011 and then spread rapidly to many European countries. SBV is an orthobunyavirus that causes abortion and congenital abnormalities in ruminants.

A human genome-wide loss-of-function screen identifies effective chikungunya antiviral drugs [PDF]
Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a globally spreading alphavirus against which there is no commercially available vaccine or therapy. Here we use a genome-wide siRNA screen to identify 156 proviral and 41 antiviral host factors affecting CHIKV replication ...

A Viral mRNA Motif at the 3′-Untranslated Region that Confers Translatability in a Cell-Specific Manner. Implications for Virus Evolution [PDF]
Sindbis virus (SINV) mRNAs contain several motifs that participate in the regulation of their translation. We have discovered a motif at the 3′ untranslated region (UTR) of viral mRNAs, constituted by three repeated sequences, which is involved in the ...

Regulation of autophagy and mTOR during Semliki Forest virus infection [PDF]
Semliki Forest virus (SFV) infection causes dramatic changes to the infected cell. For example, synthesis of most cellular proteins shuts off within 4 hours.

Alphavirus persistence in the insect vector is an essential element in the vector-host transmission cycle of the virus and provides a model to study the biochemical and molecular basis for virus-vector coexistence. The prototype alphavirus Sindbis (SV) establishes persistent infections in invertebrate cell cultures which are characterized by low levels
