Aluminum Nanocrystals [PDF]

open access: yesNano Letters, 2015
We demonstrate the facile synthesis of high purity aluminum nanocrystals over a range of controlled sizes from 70 to 220 nm diameter with size control achieved through a simple modification of solvent ratios in the reaction solution. The monodisperse, icosahedral, and trigonal bipyramidal nanocrystals are air-stable for weeks, due to the formation of a

Magnetic field dependence of the internal quality factor and noise performance of lumped-element kinetic inductance detectors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We present a technique for increasing the internal quality factor of kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) by nulling ambient magnetic fields with a properly applied magnetic field.

Phase Relations in the Aluminum Carbide–Aluminum Nitride–Aluminum Oxide System

open access: yesJournal of the American Ceramic Society, 1997
The phase diagram of the pseudobinary Al 4 C 3 ‐AlN system was predicted using thermodynamic models. It was combined with previous thermodynamic descriptions of the pseudobinary Al4C3‐Al 2 O 3

Inhomogeneity of microstructure and mechanical properties in ultra-thick 7050-T7451 plate

open access: yesJournal of Aeronautical Materials
The ultra-thick 7050-T7451 plates, which are commonly utilized in the primary load-bearing components of aerospace structures, confront a challenge:a discrepancy in properties along their thickness directions.

Hyperactive ice‐binding proteins stabilize cell membranes and improve resistance to dehydration stress in Caenorhabditis elegans

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
TisIBP8, a fungal‐derived hyperactive ice‐binding protein, helps Caenorhabditis elegans survive dehydration. It localizes near cell membranes, reduces cell damage, and helps maintain membrane structure during drying. These results suggest that ice‐binding proteins can protect cells from dehydration stress as well as freezing stress.

Investigation of the Frozen Bath Layer under Cold Anodes

open access: yesMetals, 2017
Hall-Héroult cell stability is highly affected by anode changing operations. Upon the insertion of a cold anode in the cell, a layer of molten cryolite freezes under the anode. The thickness, microstructure, and chemical composition of this layer vary as

Characterization of Defect Distribution in an Additively Manufactured AlSi10Mg as a Function of Processing Parameters and Correlations with Extreme Value Statistics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Predicting extreme defects in additive manufacturing remains a key challenge limiting its structural reliability. This study proposes a statistical framework that integrates Extreme Value Theory with advanced process indicators to explore defect–process relationships and improve the estimation of critical defect sizes. The approach provides a basis for
