Variable Stiffness Flexure Structures Enabled by Phase‐Change Gallium and Adhesive Interfacial Locking for Soft Robotic Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A flexure‐based variable stiffness structure is developed by integrating phase‐change modulation and adhesive interfacial locking of gallium. The design enables a wide stiffness variability, transitioning from soft, flexible behavior to rigid, load‐supporting performance.

Current status and future potential of bio-pitch as binder in carbon anodes for aluminum production; A review

open access: yesNext Materials
The aluminum industry is a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions partly due to the consumption of fossil-derived carbon anodes in the Hall-Héroult electrolytic process. This review explores the reported studies on bio-pitch (BP) as a

Combined Process‐ and Phase‐Field‐Simulation to Predict the Microstructure of Single‐Crystal Ni‐Based Superalloys

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A combined finite element and phase‐field approach predicts the evolution of microstructure during the directional solidification of Ni‐based superalloys. The model reveals how withdrawal rate, temperature gradient, and wall thickness control the dendrite spacing, highlighting the strong effect of surface regions in thin sections where dendrite growth ...

Criteria of Grain Refinement Induced by Ultrasonic Melt Treatment of Aluminum Alloys Containing Zr and Ti [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
It is well known that ultrasonic melt treatment (UST) promotes grain refinement in aluminum alloys. Cavitation-aided grain refinement has been studied for many years; however, it is still not being applied commercially. The current article summarizes the

Effects of the surface properties and particle size of hydrated lime on desulfurization

open access: yesCleaner Materials
In the gas treatment center in smelters, hydrogen fluoride (HF) is separated from the outlet gases of electrolysis cells, which are used to produce aluminum from alumina. However, SO2 largely remains in the effluent gas.

Pyramidal Structures on Yttria‐Stabilized Zirconia after High Temperature Exposure at 1500°C: New Features on an Old Material

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
New features on yttria‐stabilized zirconia after exposure at 1500°C: Newly discovered pyramidal structures on an old material. After exposure at 1550°C on the cross section of YSZ new features, namely pyramidal structures are discovered. These structures grow with time, increase in numbers, appear as singularities, are often arranged in strings, and ...

Towards Defect Phase Diagrams: From Research Data Management to Automated Workflows

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A research data management infrastructure is presented for the systematic integration of heterogeneous experimental and simulation data required for defect phase diagrams. The approach combines openBIS with a companion application for large‐object storage, automated metadata extraction, provenance tracking and federated data access, thereby supporting ...

Multi-Time Optimization Scheduling Strategy for Integrated Energy Systems Considering Multiple Controllable Loads and Carbon Capture Plants

open access: yesEnergies
In response to the dual carbon targets, it is necessary not only to reduce carbon emissions but also to increase the proportion of renewable energy generation capacity, thereby exacerbating the scarcity of flexible resources in the power system ...
