Maternal nicotine exposure has been associated with many adverse fetal and placental outcomes. Although underlying mechanisms remain elusive, recent studies have identified that augmented endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is linked to placental ...

Biochemical characterization of NfsA, the Escherichia coli major nitroreductase exhibiting a high amino acid sequence homology to Frp, a Vibrio harveyi flavin oxidoreductase [PDF]
We identified the nfsA gene, encoding the major oxygen-insensitive nitroreductase in Escherichia coli, and determined its position on the E. coli map to be 19 min. We also purified its gene product, NfsA, to homogeneity. It was suggested that NfsA is a nonglobular protein with a molecular weight of 26,799 and is associated tightly with a flavin ...

Structure, mechanism, and evolution of the last step in vitamin C biosynthesis
Photosynthetic organisms, fungi, and animals comprise distinct pathways for vitamin C biosynthesis. Besides this diversity, the final biosynthetic step consistently involves an oxidation reaction carried out by the aldonolactone oxidoreductases. Here, we

Peroxidasin enables melanoma immune escape by inhibiting natural killer cell cytotoxicity
Peroxidasin (PXDN) is secreted by melanoma cells and binds the NK cell receptor NKG2D, thereby suppressing NK cell activation and cytotoxicity. PXDN depletion restores NKG2D signaling and enables effective NK cell–mediated melanoma killing. These findings identify PXDN as a previously unrecognized immune evasion factor and a potential target to improve

Characterisation of FAD-family folds using a machine learning approach [PDF]
Flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) and its derivatives play a crucial role in biological processes. They are major organic cofactors and electron carriers in both enzymatic activities and biochemical pathways. We have analysed the relationships between

How are proteins reduced in the endoplasmic reticulum? [PDF]
The reversal of thiol oxidation in proteins within the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is crucial for protein folding, degradation, chaperone function, and the ER stress response. Our understanding of this process is generally poor but progress has been made.

Meta‐transcriptome analysis identified FGF19 as a peptide enteroendocrine hormone associated with colorectal cancer prognosis. In vivo xenograft models showed release of FGF19 into the blood at levels that correlated with tumor volumes. Tumoral‐FGF19 altered murine liver metabolism through FGFR4, thereby reducing bile acid synthesis and increasing ...

A Metagenomic Analysis of Bacterial Microbiota in the Digestive Tract of Triatomines
The digestive tract of triatomines (DTT) is an ecological niche favored by microbiota whose enzymatic profile is adapted to the specific substrate availability in this medium.

The Substitution of a Single Amino Acid Residue (Ser-116 → Asp) Alters NADP-containing Glucose-Fructose Oxidoreductase ofZymomonas mobilis into a Glucose Dehydrogenase with Dual Coenzyme Specificity [PDF]
Glucose-fructose oxidoreductase (GFOR, EC 1.1.1.99.-) from the Gram-negative bacterium Zymomonas mobilis contains the tightly bound cofactor NADP. Based on the revision of the gfo DNA sequence, the derived GFOR sequence was aligned with enzymes catalyzing reactions with similar substrates.

Sulfite: Cytochrome \u3cem\u3ec\u3c/em\u3e Oxidoreductase from \u3cem\u3eThiobacillus novellus\u3c/em\u3e [PDF]
Direct oxidation of sulfite to sulfate occurs in various photo- and chemotrophic sulfur oxidizing microorganisms as the final step in the oxidation of reduced sulfur compounds and is catalyzed by sulfite:cytochrome c oxidoreductase (EC1.8.2.1).
