Novel cones in the retina of the anchovy (Anchoa)

Preliminary studies on the eyes of Anchoa mitchilli and A. hepsetus reveal the existence of cones with a novel arrangement and structure. The cones form parallel rows consisting of alternately placed long cones and short bifid cones. Both types of cones are intimately associated and form triple units regularly spaced along the row of cones.

Attenuation of sound by schooled anchovies

A laboratory experiment is described in which acoustic attenuation through an aggregation of live anchovies was measured over the frequency spectrum 1–20 kHz. The fish were enclosed in a plexiglass sphere of 1.2-m3 internal volume, and the estimated population density during the test was 650 fish/m3.
