Aggressive prostate cancer is associated with pericyte dysfunction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumor‐produced TGF‐β drives pericyte dysfunction in prostate cancer. This dysfunction is characterized by downregulation of some canonical pericyte markers (i.e., DES, CSPG4, and ACTA2) while maintaining the expression of others (i.e., PDGFRB, NOTCH3, and RGS5).

Use of Antiandrogens as Therapeutic Agents in COVID-19 Patients

open access: yesViruses, 2022
COVID-19, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS CoV-2), is estimated to have caused over 6.5 million deaths worldwide. The emergence of fast-evolving SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern alongside increased transmissibility and/or

Sex significantly influences transduction of murine liver by recombinant adeno-associated viral vectors through an androgen-dependent pathway. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
A systematic evaluation of the influence of sex on transduction by recombinant adeno-associated viral vector (rAAV) indicated that transgene expression after liver-targeted delivery of vector particles was between 5- to 13-fold higher in male mice ...

PARP inhibition and pharmacological ascorbate demonstrate synergy in castration‐resistant prostate cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pharmacologic ascorbate (vitamin C) increases ROS, disrupts cellular metabolism, and induces DNA damage in CRPC cells. These effects sensitize tumors to PARP inhibition, producing synergistic growth suppression with olaparib in vitro and significantly delayed tumor progression in vivo. Pyruvate rescue confirms ROS‐dependent activity.

Circulating adrenal and gonadal steroid hormones heterogeneity in active young males and the contribution of 11-oxy androgens

open access: yesScientific Reports
The classical androgens, testosterone and dihydrotestosterone, together with dehydroepiandrosterone, the precusrsor to all androgens, are generally included in diagnostic steroid evaluations of androgen excess and deficiency disorders and monitored in ...

Effect of antiandrogen flutamide on measures of hepatic regeneration in rats [PDF]

open access: yes, 1989
Male rat liver undergoes a process of demasculinization during hepatic regeneration following partial hepatectomy. The possibility that antiandrogens might potentiate this demasculinization process and in so doing augment the hepatic regenerative ...

Interplay between RNA‐protein interactions and RNA structures in gene regulation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Methodological advances in mapping transcriptome‐wide RNA‐protein interactions and RNA structures have started to uncover the potential of RNP conformations in gene regulation. Competing RNA–RNA, RNA‐protein and protein–protein interactions shape the compaction and function of RNPs throughout their lifetime and may provide novel therapeutic targets in ...

Androgens and cardiac diseases

open access: yesMonaldi Archives for Chest Disease, 2013
Although androgens have been considered deleterious for the cardiovascular system, recent data have demonstrated favourable testosterone effects on cardiac and vascular remodeling and clinical outcome.

Synergistic disruption of external male sex organ development by a mixture of four antiandrogens [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Reproduced with permission from Environmental Health Perspectives. Background: By disrupting the action of androgens during gestation, certain chemicals present in food, consumer products, and the environment can induce irreversible demasculinization and ...
