The characterization of androstenone transport in boar plasma.

The Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, 2019
The transport of steroids by plasma proteins influences the amount of steroid available for uptake by the target tissue. In the boar, androstenone is transported to the adipose tissue where it accumulates to cause an off-odour or off-flavour in pork ...

Coexpression of VHb and MceG genes in Mycobacterium sp. Strain LZ2 enhances androstenone production via immobilized repeated batch fermentation.

Bioresource Technology, 2021
Androstenone production is limited by low-efficiency substrate transport and dissolved oxygen levels during fermentation. In this study, the coexpression of the optimized Vitreoscilla hemoglobin (VHb) and sterol transporter ATPase (MceG) genes in ...

Androstenone induces horses to be more compliant with human–horse interactions

Journal of veterinary behavior, 2021
Olfactory signals play an essential role in communication in animals. Pheromones are volatile or nonvolatile chemicals that trigger social responses among animals.

Reduction of Pig Agonistic Behavior by Androstenone

Journal of Animal Science, 1988
One hundred twenty-four prepuberal crossbred pigs were used in a series of behavioral bioassays to determine the minimum dose of androstenone (5 alpha-androst-16-en-3-one) that would reduce the level of agonistic behavior among dyads of newly regrouped pigs. Randomly selected females and castrated males were used in 21-h videotaped observation periods.

Characterisation of androstenone metabolism in pig liver microsomes

Chemico-Biological Interactions, 2004
Androstenone (5 alpha-androst-16-en-3-one) is a steroid pheromone produced in the testis. Excessive accumulation of androstenone together with skatole (3-methyl-indole) in the adipose tissue of some male pigs leads to "boar taint". In isolated pig hepatocytes androstenone represses the expression of cytochrome P450IIE1 (CYP2E1), the enzyme principally ...

Testicular development, androstenone levels and androstenone odour of untreated and trenbolone implanted boars

Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, 1991
AbstractTwelve boars were implanted at 50 kg live weight with 300 mg of trenbolone acetate (TBA), and 12 male litter mates were held as controls. All animals were slaughtered at 175 days of age and ∼ 100 kg live weight. TBA administration led to a decrease in testicle size (P<0.001) and testosterone levels (P<0.05).
