Sedating Mechanically Ventilated COVID-19 Patients with Volatile Anesthetics: Insights on the Last-Minute Potential Weapons

open access: yesScientia Pharmaceutica, 2021
Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has spread globally with the number of cases exceeding seventy million. Although trials on potential treatments of COVID-19 Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) are promising, the introduction of an effective ...

Volatile anesthetics alter protein stability

open access: yesToxicology Letters, 1998
1. We have used differential scanning calorimetry to measure the halothane induced change in stability of five lipid-free proteins in aqueous solution. 2. The temperature at peak heat capacity (Tm) as the sample is heated provides a measure of stability. 3.

High-throughput screening in larval zebrafish identifies novel potent sedative-hypnotics [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
BACKGROUND: Many general anesthetics were discovered empirically, but primary screens to find new sedative-hypnotics in drug libraries have not used animals, limiting the types of drugs discovered.

Inhibition of firefly luciferase by general anesthetics: effect on in vitro and in vivo bioluminescence imaging. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2012
UNLABELLED: Bioluminescence imaging is routinely performed in anesthetized mice. Often isoflurane anesthesia is used because of its ease of use and fast induction/recovery.

The effect of volatile anesthetics on cellular responses in the microcirculation of free tissue transfers

open access: yesAdvances in Interventional Cardiology, 2021
The purpose of this review was to summarize the anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties of volatile anesthetics and present their potential impact on the outcomes of major surgical procedures as well as microsurgical cases of free tissue ...

Hierarchical Summary Statistics Encoding Across Primary Visual and Posterior Parietal Cortices

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study shows that mouse V1 simultaneously encodes the ensemble mean and variance of motion, providing a robust summary‐statistic representation that persists despite single‐neuron variability. These signals propagate to PPC, where they are transformed into abstract category representations during decision making.

Surgical site infection after colorectal surgery according to the main anesthetic agent: a retrospective comparison between volatile anesthetics and propofol [PDF]

open access: yesKorean Journal of Anesthesiology, 2016
BackgroundAnesthetic agents used for general anesthesia are emerging possible influential factors for surgical site infection (SSI). In this retrospective study, we evaluated the incidence of SSI after colorectal surgery according to the main anesthetic ...

Mechanisms of Volatile Anesthetic-Induced Myocardial Protection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Volatile anesthetics protect myocardium against reversible and irreversible ischemic injury. Experimental evidence from several in vitro and in vivo animal models demonstrates that volatile agents enhance the recovery of stunned myocardium and reduce the

Endogenous “Time Bomb” – Mislocalized Phospholipase A2 as a Critical Mediator of Ultra‐Rapid Mortality in Sepsis and Acute Lung Injury

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Phospholipase A2 (PLA2), a dormant enzyme, becomes lethal when activated—collapsing lungs in minutes. Our dual therapy (DOPS + varespladib) boosts survival from 0% to >90% in sepsis/ALI. A breakthrough for acute lung injury treatment. ABSTRACT This study reveals that phospholipase A2 (PLA2), normally stable and nontoxic, can be activated specifically ...

SNARE proteins as molecular masters of interneuronal communication [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
In the beginning of the 20th century the groundbreaking work\ud of Ramon y Cajal firmly established the neuron doctrine, according to which neurons are the basic structural and functional units of the nervous system. Von Weldeyer coined the term “neuron”
