Assessing potential desflurane-induced neurotoxicity using nonhuman primate neural stem cell models

open access: yesExperimental Biology and Medicine
Safety concerns about general anesthetics (GA), such as desflurane (a commonly used gaseous anesthetic agent), arose from studies documenting neural cell death and behavioral changes after early-life exposure to anesthetics and compounds with related ...

A randomized controlled prospective study comparing a low dose bupivacaine and fentanyl mixture to a conventional dose of hyperbaric bupivacaine for cesarean section

open access: yesSaudi Journal of Anaesthesia, 2015
Context: Hormonal and mechanical factors make obstetric patients need strict dose calculations of local anesthetics intrathecally for spinal anesthesia.

Influence of the Anesthetic Technique on Circulating Extracellular Vesicles in Bladder Cancer Patients Undergoing Radical Cystectomy: A Prospective, Randomized Trial

open access: yesCells, 2023
Anesthetics have been shown to alter tumor progression and seem to influence surgical cancer outcome. Circulating extracellular vesicles as mediators of intercellular communication are involved in cancer progression and may be influenced by anesthetics ...

Erythropoietin modulates hepatic inflammation, glucose homeostasis, and soluble epoxide hydrolase and epoxides in high‐fat diet‐induced obese mice

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Erythropoietin administration suppresses hepatic soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) expression, leading to increased CYP‐derived epoxides. This is associated with a shift in hepatic macrophage polarization characterized by reduced M1 markers and increased M2 markers, along with reduced hepatic inflammation, suppressed hepatic lipogenesis, and attenuated ...

Identification of mitochondria-related genes associated with anesthetics in patients undergoing off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting surgery

open access: yesFrontiers in Surgery
BackgroundAnesthetics have been reported to play a protective role in the heart during surgery. This study aimed to identify mitochondrial-related genes (Mito-RGs) involved in sevoflurane- and propofol-induced anesthesia in patients undergoing off-pump ...

Iron homeostasis disruption and lipid peroxidation in skeletal muscle during short‐term immobilization

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
14‐day casting‐induced immobilization reduced gastrocnemius muscle mass and increased non‐heme iron and ferritin heavy chain levels. Despite iron accumulation, transferrin receptor 1 and iron regulatory protein 2 were paradoxically upregulated. Lipid peroxidation was elevated without compensatory antioxidant responses.
