Anion Recognition by Organometallic Calixarenes: Analysis from Relativistic DFT Calculations

open access: yes, 2018
The physical nature of the noncovalent interactions involved in anion recognition was investigated in the context of metalated calix[4]arene hosts, employing Kohn–Sham molecular orbital (KS-MO) theory, in conjunction with a canonical energy ...

From Food to Power: Hydrogel Thermoelectrics for Ingestible Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We introduce a fully edible thermoelectric–electrochromic platform that harvests heat from food and converts it into a visible color change. N‐type and p‐type hydrogel thermoelectric generators connected in series power anthocyanin‐based electrochromic displays, demonstrating the feasibility of safe, biodegradable, ingestible systems for on‐food ...

Probing the anion binding promiscuity of the soluble nitrate sensor NreA from Staphylococcus carnosus

open access: yesCommunications Chemistry
Promiscuity, or selectivity on a spectrum, is an encoded feature in biomolecular anion recognition. To unravel the molecular drivers of promiscuous anion recognition, we have employed a comprehensive approach – spanning experiment and theory – with the ...

Regulated Ion‐Diffusion Hydrogels for Subtle and Multimodal Temperature‐Strain Sensing in Wound Monitoring

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A soft, dual‐channel hydrogel patch enables simultaneous detection of wound temperature and strain by integrating ion‐diffusion‐mediated thermoelectric and resistive sensing. The conformal design maintains stable performance during motion, capturing subtle inflammatory and mechanical changes for continuous wound monitoring.

Fully Additive Vertical Organic Electrochemical Transistors on Renewable and Compostable Substrates Enable Ultrasensitive Bioelectronics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Fully additive vertical organic electrochemical transistors (vOECTs) with channel‐length of 226 nm on a 50 µm compostable substrate achieve >106 current modulation and ∼36 mS transconductance. Ion‐selective integration enables 1.1 mA dec−1 sensitivity and 36 µm detection limit, highlighting a scalable platform for sustainable electronics and ...

Anion-Induced Self-Assembly of Bis(cyclopeptides) with Rigid Linkers

open access: yesChemistry
The presence of sulfate anions induces the self-assembly of anion-binding bis(cyclopeptides) in which two cyclopeptide rings are connected via a rigid linker.

Bile Acid Scaffolds in Supramolecular Chemistry: The Interplay of Design and Synthesis

open access: yesMolecules, 2007
Since early work in the 1980s, the bile acids have become well established as building blocks for supramolecular chemistry. The author’s laboratory has specialised in converting cholic acid, the archetypal bile acid, into macrocyclic and acyclic ...

Implantable Ionic Memristors Based on Natural Polymer Heterojunctions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We report an implantable natural polymer‐based ionic memristor composed of hyaluronic acid, chitosan, and PDMS. The device achieved 98.94% accuracy in MNIST classification while reducing training time by 36.8% compared with a conventional artificial neural network (ANN).
